Then you can always use the mathematical way.

Height of tree = distance from tree x tan(x°)
e.g. Height of tree = 50 feet x tan(40 degrees) = 50 feet x 0.84 = 42 feet

I remember doing that in maths exercises at school, but couldn't quite remember the formula (and you do rather need a theodolite to make it work in real life).
