Yes, that is very similar to Father Time, but a lot shorter and simpler. I would guess Enid had the general idea of children being shown the "picture" or "tapestry" of their good and bad deeds for the year, put it into a short story for her Book of the Year, then expanded on it a few years later. I like Father Time and His Pattern Book better, as it's a more detailed story and really draws the reader in, but it's interesting to see how Enid started with and then developed the theme. Thanks for sharing both of them, Pete — it's a big help to those of us who don't have very many short story collections on hand!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I thought you had Enid Blyton's Book of the Year...? Maybe I'm mistaken...Courtenay wrote:Thanks for sharing both of them, Pete — it's a big help to those of us who don't have very many short story collections on hand!

I do, but I haven't read the whole of it yet, only dipped into it!! I might read through it week by week, starting next year, i.e. tomorrow...
(Oh dear, just had the thought then: "Why would Enid do a "book of the year" designed for schools starting in January, when everyone's on holiday until late January or early February??" Er, ahem. My Antipodean mentality is showing again. )

Great idea to read it bit by bit through the year! I might do the same as I've never read mine either!
I hadn't thought about Christmas/new year school holidays in Australia...the summer holidays I guess.

Yes. We mostly finish in the middle of December (some schools, and some states, finish a little earlier or later than others) and have Christmas and all or most of January off before starting again in the last week of January or first week of February, so that the whole school year fits into the calendar year. Which of course is eminently sensible.Rob Houghton wrote: I hadn't thought about Christmas/new year school holidays in Australia...the summer holidays I guess.

I thought I would bump these two stories, as Anita has rightly said they are very timely.
If you haven't read them, see what you think.
I'm going to read them again...

I’ve read Father Time and his Pattern Book when it was posted earlier in the year, this is a GREAT story.

I love it too and am glad to be reminded of it! It's a very thought-provoking story that I wish I'd known when I was little.
