As I mentioned in an earlier thread, we used to have Jack frost window paintings a lot when I was a child. I can remember copying something I read (I think) in the story of 'The Snow Queen' where one of the characters breathes on a coin, presses it to the window, and makes a spy-hole! I used to love seeing the ferms and leaves on the windows, but its something I haven't seen for many years.
As I live in the same house, and we don't have double-glazing or central heating, I'm puzzled as to why we no longer have frosted windows. Maybe the weather really isn't as cold as it used to be...or maybe its because downstairs we do have one storage radiator, which we didn't used to have. Other than that, the circumstances are the same, except we no longer have an open fire, but a 'living flame' gas fire instead, plus a normal gas fire in the other downstairs room (which was always the case). We also have electric blankets on the beds, whereas in my childhood we had hot water bottles, but I wouldn't have thought that would make much difference...so maybe winters really are warmer than they used to be, although we think they aren't!
