I found all five without worryng about any accent... "non-rhotic"? just what is that meant to mean? I know "rhoticize", but can't see the relevance.

'Ope that 'elps Daisy..Australian English (AuE) is a non-rhotic variety of English spoken by most native-born Australians. Phonologically, it is one of the most regionally homogeneous language varieties in the world. As with most dialects of English, it is distinguished primarily by its vowel phonology.

That's a great example of bad alignment of colour, Anita! (or maybe a bad example!) - just what I was thinking of. Fancy having that in a first edition - and I wonder if all first editions are the same or if that was just a badly printed first edition?

Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Gosh, that red ink makes it look like a still from some kind of slasher flick!!Anita Bensoussane wrote: I too have come across inking that's so sloppy it makes the pictures look blurred. It's most annoying. Tony had to put two versions of certain Secret Seven Adventure illustrations in the Cave because the colour was so badly aligned in the first edition. Here's just one example:
First edition:
Not pronouncing the letter R distinctly at the ends of words and syllables. It means, for example, that "pour" and "paw" sound exactly the same the way I pronounce them, but they wouldn't in some British accents (I think mainly northern ones) and most American accents. Has a bearing on one of the creatures' names hidden in the puzzle — the two words in question only sound exactly the same if you don't pronounce the R that's in one of them.Daisy wrote:"non-rhotic"? just what is that meant to mean?

Well, if its the word I think you mean, I pronounce an 'R' for both words, even when there isn't one!!Courtenay wrote: the two words in question only sound exactly the same if you don't pronounce the R that's in one of them.

I don't see why not, though it might be a good idea to wait for a day or two in case others see your answers before they've had time to have a look at the puzzle.sixret wrote:I found 4 only. What is the other one? Can I list all 4 that I found?

You got the one that I missed, which was mite.
The one you didn't get is plaice.

That's interesting - I didn't get 'mite' but counted 'you' as 'ewe'.

Thank you Anita and Daisy.
I knew the ‘you’ sounded familiar to animal kingdom but could not pinpoint to any animal in particular until you mentioned it, Daisy.
Plaice is a new word for me. I had to search for the meaning using Google, Anita.

I didn't get "mite" either but did get "ewe" — maybe that means there were really six creatures!
