Olivia Newton John RIP

Post by Lucky Star »

More sad news from the Australian singing world. Olivia Newton John has died aged just 73. I first saw her in Grease and always enjoyed her music. R.I.P.

Sad news. I remember going to see her in Grease at the cinema - only about the third film I'd seen.

I remember hearing If Not For You back in 1971 and loved it. Watching her perform this on TotP had me falling in love! A truly great professional and lovely person. We are all hopelessly devoted to her.

So sad for we Australians to have lost two of our greatest female icons of music in a week.

Vale Livvy, Hope you are up in musical heaven singing some duets with Judith Durham.

Speaking of both Judith & Olivia...

During covid lockdown our national broadcaster - ABC - used one of the Seekers" popular songs (from when they reformed in the 90s) 'I Am Australian' as a station ident. It featured everyday Aussies singing the song together via video link from their homes. It was extremely popular and they did other versions of it as covid continued.

In one of them it was a very pleasant surprise to see Olivia as the featured singer. It may even have been her final recorded performance.

Here it is for anybody interested - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tl5KzjcsVgY

As a Cricket fan, similar happened earlier this year for Australia with Shane Warne and Rod Marsh dying within 24 hours of each other - and Andrew Symonds dying just a couple of months later. Particularly shocking to hear about Symonds and Warne, with their deaths being very sudden and out of the blue aged just 46 and 52.

Yes that was a very sad time too. They say things come in threes (or at least multiples).

Had four friends die in 2013. Two of them only in their 30s. My Mum (suddenly - a shock) and my best friend (after a long 3 or 4 year battle with cancer) also passed. Still not over that year.

And then some of your icons die in a week. Brings it all back :(

Aw, she was lovely. :( Came across as a very nice person, and sung some great songs. I never actually saw Grease until I was about 30 - but Summer Nights was one of the very first music videos I recall being played on Top of the Pops. The men walking along the benches, and the women singing the lines in between!

Also remember the song Physical when it was in the charts.

I've never followed cricket, and in his heyday to me, Shane Warne was simply the name of a player who got mentioned a lot. But on the evening after he died, I was having quite a melancholic chat with a friend in the pub about him as footage of him kept appearing on the television screens. The fact that someone a few years older than me who you would expect to be athletically fit could just drop dead like that was shocking. :(
