RIP Bernard Cribbins

Actor Bernard Cribbins OBE has passed away at the age of 93. His career spanned seven decades ranging from films like The Railway Children and the Carry On series, hit 60’s song "Right Said Fred", a notorious guest on Fawlty Towers and narrating The Wombles. I mainly remember him for his role in "Frenzy", which is one of my favourite films and despite watching it many times over the years it still manages to shock me.

Bernard also appeared in two episodes of my favourite tv show, The Avengers. His best song was Gossip Calypso.

He was in a Fawlty Towers episode, as a spoon salesman who Basil thinks is a hotel inspector. And in the lovely, lovely film The Railway Children. another piece of my childhood gone.

Yeah, sad news.
I remember him from films like The Railway Children and Two Way Stretch, but, in particular, from his appearance in the Fawlty Towers episode as I still watch that regularly - and, most recently, in the last few weeks.
I still regularly rewatch a lot of shows / sitcoms from the 70's and 80's, and so in recent years have been very sad to see the death of the likes of Tony Britton, Geoffrey Palmer, Peter Bowles...

I've also wondered for a long time whether Bernard Cribbins is the narrator of this Noddy clip:

The story is called 'The Further Adventures of Noddy - the Great Car Race' and I've got it on an NSPCC video compilation of 'Children's TV Favourites'. There are no credits at the start or end of the programme. On the back of the video sleeve it says 'Copyright 1987 Darrell Waters/Mc Donald'. Is it a one-off or could it have been part of a series?

All I can find out about the narrator of the Great Car Race is that it seems to be ‘Patrick Troughman’, of whom I have not heard.
But it certainly sounds like Bernard Cribbins.
It was supposed to be a series but funding was not forthcoming and only one episode was made.

Shocked to read this as I didn't realise he was that old. I remember him best from The Avengers, The Railway Children and of course as the spoon salesman who got on Basil's nerves in Fawlty Towers. Also liked his appearances on The Good Old Days when BBC4 re-ran them a few years ago. RIP Bernard Cribbins.
