Ha Ha excellent Pete. It actually must have been just such a storm that Enid had in mind when she wrote that.
Thanks for the good wishes everyone. I'm just glad we have all come through it safely.

It's turned cold and dark now with lashings of rain so I expect they made the right decision!

This sounds so blissfully Blytonesque!
Apparently that's a real word now:

Hmm - "harmless mysteries" and "wholesome children" makes Enid Blyton's work sound insipid, which it certainly isn't!Adjective
Blytonesque (comparative more Blytonesque, superlative most Blytonesque)
In the style of Enid Blyton (1897–1968), British children's writer, whose works are characterised by harmless mysteries investigated by wholesome children.

I thought of Smuggler's Top when I read that story.

I thought the same when I saw this article.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Yikes that looks nasty. They went to the pub! They obviously don't have any scientific friends living in nearby marshes.

Power cut last Friday. Still no power
Re: The Great UK Storm Of February 2022
Sorry to hear that - I hope you don't have to wait much longer to get reconnected.
I have to leave for work within the next half hour or so and am really anxious about driving in the gusty wind out there.

Hope you had a safe journey to and from work, Katharine, and I hope you get your power back soon, Barnard.

Re: The Great UK Storm Of February 2022
Thanks Anita. I got hit by a couple of side gusts, but thankfully not strong enough to do more than just give me a jolt.
Work was pretty spectacular - the wind howled round the building and down the chimneys. As the wind died down abit, the heavens opened and we had torrential rain. By the time I finished the sun was out and it was a beautiful afternoon. The great British weather.

We missed the storms here. All three of them. Whatever weather the country is supposed to be having it's always different where I am. It's like we're in a different dimension .
