R.I.P Trini Lopez

I was saddened to read that the singer and actor Trini Lopez has died of complications from Coronavirus, at the age of 83.

I well remember listening to his great hit 'If I Had a Hammer' on my 'tranny' in the 60s.

My parents had the LP ‘Trini Lopez at PJ‘S‘ which they’d inherited along with a large stack of other various LPs - and the player as well! Spent hours as a kid playing them. That was my first introduction to his music. I still love it to this day. My favourite among them was This Land is your Land. I will play some from this album today. Didn’t know he had passed away.

Saddened to hear of the demise of Trini Lopez. He was very much a fixture of my childhood of the seventies. Constantly played on the radio were Lemon Tree, This Land is your land, Shame and Scandal in the family. The latter was a gently risque song which had many adults in splits. I still have an old cassette of his greatest hits which includes some nice renditions he did of Latin hits like Perfidia.

Had to play ‘shame and scandal’ on YouTube just now - ah yes, I remember this, an oldie and a good one. I feel that only Mr Lopez could sing it the ‘right way’. Growing up, we never saw him sing, as these videos were not a thing of course. These are really nice clips thanks. Amused to see the oldies doing the " twist" better than the lost young ones! These must be pre Covid? I am not a great fan of 60s and after music anymore but make exceptions for some like Trini. He had a great voice and could do up -tempo as well as softer numbers so well..

sayantani, the live concert is at Maastricht (Netherlands) - I believe it was 2018. Yes, definitely pre-pandemic days. Kinda sad watching this, but we'll get there again. They have flags, but not mobile (cell) phones. Maybe they weren't allowed - hopefully not. It would have spoilt the video as well! The guy in the red blazer with the bow tie LOL. Nice seeing people genuinely happy - quite uplifting.

Yes agree totally..Trini had a happy cheerful voice which gave a feel good vibe to anyone who heard and watched him..that's what I saw in the clip too. He lives on in his music, but it is so sad to think that Pat Boone and Tony Bennet are the only ones remaining with us of broadly the same genre now..
