One of the things I like about Enid's writing is that the stories were set in the countryside, and she had a stab at using local dialects.

I've just had an interesting hour listening to Dorset dialects, courtesy of the British Library.

Thanks for the link. Had great fun listening to my local dialect! I used to have some good books on the subject, but I ain't got a clue where they went to. The subtle differences in dialects between where I live and Nottingham, just a few miles down the road from me, are amazing! I only have to travel a few miles in the other direction and the accent changes yet again! However, it does bug me a bit when I talk to people living in the South, and they call me a Northener. I'm not. I'm a Midlander. There's a difference! Then again, I suppose anyone living beyond the Watford Gap are considered Northerners by Southern softies!
