Sounds like you went down Ffordd Penllech Stephen, it's the steepest road in the UK! It's so steep you're only allowed to drive (if you're brave!) or cycle down it, not up, because if you met someone coming the opposite way and had to stop, you wouldn't be able to take off again. They like steep hills around here, the little village by Fairbourne, right across the estuary from Barmouth, has a side road leading up to the mountains behind which goes almost vertical when you first turn up to it!Stephen wrote:I visit Neath several times a year, but haven't been to North Wales for ages. I went to Barmouth when I was about one but was obviously too young to remember it. My first memory of Wales was a family holiday to Criccieth when I was eight. I remember that week visiting Pwhelli on the train, Caernarvon and Harlech (and I seem to remember a road that was about 1 in 3 steep!) I also remember seeing Snowdon from a distance, but never actually got to the top until I was about 17.
Going to Borth for a few days in May, so that might involve a visit up to Snowdonia.

Yes, I rather thought you would have.Courtenay wrote:I was going to point out that I already knew it before the previous time you explained the same thing to me (on the "Learning Welsh" thread), but decided that would just be rude.
I might have said this before, too. Cwtch is a lovely beer brewed by Tiny Rebel, a brewery in Newport. Although there is no literal meaning, I was told the nearest was a cuddle or a hug. I certainly hugged a few pints when I found some in a pub in Clapham recently.Cwtch is indeed a lovely word, which I use everyday.
Edit:
I have just opened Courtenay's link, and couldn't agree more with this line:
A cwtch is so much more than just a cuddle: the word evokes warmth, love, affection and – tying in with its other meaning – a safe place in the form of an embrace.

Dydd Dewi Sant Hapus! It's lovely and mild so I hope there are daffodils aplenty!

We used to hold an inter-house Eisteddfod on St David's Day morning and then have the afternoon off, when I was in high school in Cardiff in the 50s.

I used to love Eisteddfods! I was in a choir and a recorder group.

I was going to say "How come everyone's posting Happy St David's Day the day after St David's Day??"... er, um, forgot the time difference for a moment there. (Actually, it IS the 2nd of March in the UK now too, but I didn't have much time to go online until just now.)

I'm a week late in looking in on this thread!, but hope everyone enjoyed their celebrations and daffodils? We're hugely fortunate to live very near the enchanting City of St David's and never tire of visiting the Cathedral, Bishop's Palace, a delightful nearby bookshop, and much more. It was on the Wales at 6 news on 1/3 that an artist had created a beautiful floral "picture" of Dewi Sant on the sward at the Palace, must go along this weekend and see if its still there.
"Its a magic wood!" said Fanny suddenly.

The miniature daffodils in my garden are in full bloom - just in time for today. I took this picture this afternoon.
