I'm like Courtenay, I would sooner have an apple pie than a mince pie.

They're more refreshing somehow, aren't they, John?

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Of course they are, Courtenay. In fact, I could murder one right now.

Just eaten two Mr Kipling mince pies with Ambrosia custard- It works for me. (6 for £2 in Waitrose, 6 for £1 in Poundland or 6 for £1.90 in Tesco - but buy one get one free = 95pence for 6). Jack likes an exceedingly tasty bargain!

This thread is making me hungry - all this talk about mince pies and apple pies. I must say I love apple pies with whipped cream - it's the best combination ever! All the same, don't you think pies should be baked at home?

Yes!
My Grandma used to mix her mincemeat with stewed apple to eke it out a bit. I think I might give that a try this weekend; get the best of all worlds then.

Ideally yes, but not everyone has the time, the ability and/or the patience!Farwa wrote:All the same, don't you think pies should be baked at home?

Oh, it is. I love cooking, but don't have a kitchen of my own at the moment. However, where I live - at a care home where I also work - I get my meals included in the rent, and the cooks are so good and the food is so delicious that I don't at all mind! We get lots of lovely puddings and desserts, too, especially at Christmas. I expect we will have home-made mince pies and other such goodies in the next few days.

My mother did that too, and I have done likewise. It does make the mincemeat a bit less solid and much easier to spread - especially if you're making a large pie rather than individual ones.burlingtonbertram wrote:

I think they should be baked at home. Nothing like a nice homemade pie!
