During a trip through West Sussex for work purposes earlier today, I happened to look back as we passed near Arundel and saw this...

Definitely on my must-visit-one-day list!

Has anyone else been there?

Arundel Castle was originally built in the 11th century. It was damaged in the English Civil War and then restored in the 18th and 19th centuries. For further information about the castle, click on the following link:

The castle is certainly a very impressive building and well worth a visit, Courtenay.

I've been to Arundel Castle. It was in 1997. I don't remember a lot about it, except that I was pregnant at the time, and looked at the names on the portraits in case there were any that I liked the sound of.

Did you end up picking any of them?

I'm currently planning a trip to Cornwall, which may include Restormel Castle (Lostwithiel) and Pendennis Castle (Falmouth), as well as Tintagel - I'll post photos here if I get any good ones!

It is a great castle but allow yourself most of the day to get full value.
Lots of interesting history associated with this castle - as Catholics, the family lived a
precarious existence during the 16th century.

"Kentisbury Castle" - the fictitious home of Rosamund Kane in Elsie J. Oxenham's Abbey series is based on Arundel Castle.

We stopped off at Arundel, on the way back from East Sussex home. Saw the castle but couldn't go in of course because of the dog, but it looked fab, as was Arundel itself, and there is a second hand book shop there, with shelves of Enid Blyton.

I passed it twice, in 1981 and again last year in May when we stopped at Kim's bookstore in Arundel to pick up a used EB book. Both times no time for a guided tour

. Hopefully next time...

No Courtenay, I don't think the name we chose was one we spotted in the portraits. The only one I do remember was Charlotte, and as we had a son that wasn't much good. The reason I was so interested was because the surname on many of the pictures was the same as ours, so we could see the two names together.

I do remember wandering around the grounds as well which seemed quite nice, and I'm sure there was a good view from the car park

I think we did wander into the village as well, but I don't remember the bookshop, but then that was before my interest in Enid Blyton was renewed.

I'd definitely like to go back there again.

The bookshop in Arundel is Kims, Chrissie. It contains most of their interesting books although there is also
a smaller shop in Chichester. There used to be another branch in Worthing but that is now closed leaving Badger Books (excellent) as the only second hand bookshop in that town.

Francis, I remember Badger Books (it's next to a parking garage where a woman tried to commit suicide on that Saturday in May 2014 when we were in Worthing, so the police did block the surrounding roads, but let us walk through to Badger Books. They were so kind and called Kim's in Arundel and it turned out that they had one of the EB books that I was searching for. So we went to Arundel next (and regretted not having time left to visit the castle which looks right out of a fairy tale

).

Yes, Chrissie, it was Kim's, as Francis has also said. Lovely bookshop. And heaps of other children's authors too, plenty with dust jackets.

Julie, unfortunately we were in a hurry as we were going to 3 different used book stores in 3 towns on that day (there was one more after Worthing and Arundel, but I forgot the name, it's a town where one used book store is on top of the hill near a train station and the other one is at the bottom of the hill in the downtown area).
So there was no time at all to explore Kim's in Arundel as much as I would have enjoyed doing that.
