For the record (no pun), I also have the Richard Harris album.

The Beggars Opera version is great as well – as good as the original for me, but different.

The late Donna Summer took a few liberties with the lyrics like “Chinese checkers” instead of ordinary “checkers” but it sort of fitted her interpretation of it.

Isn’t this an example of a cheesy song?
It was quite popular in its day and I liked it back then. :)

I know this is random, but I love Richard Harris! Such a shame he died. He done a much better job than Michael Gambon in Harry Potter
Abi.

Still trialling other writers, but will eventually go back to reading a bit of Blyton! Just too many books...

Occasionally will pop in! xx

Talking about Beggars opera, I recently listened to "Time machine" again. I have to check if I recorded anything else from them, it's about 20 years I haven't listened to my tapes...

That’s the thing with tapes and records, they tend to be neglected nowadays. I also have that track on tape ... somewhere! Actually I converted most of my important tapes to mp3 so it will be on my pc as well.

I'm in the process of doing this, about the first 100 MCs have been digitalised and tracks cut, 150 still to go...

I don't know those two songs, Barnard. I'll have to look them up on YouTube sometime!

Of the five you mention, Pete, I'm rather fond of Remember You're a Womble and Ernie. Okay, I admit that Remember You're a Womble is pretty cheesy, but Ernie is actually a very clever composition!

Billy don't be a hero is actually not a bad song at all.

Cinderella Rockafella by Esther and Abi Ofarim. It was on the wireless the other day. If that isn't cheesy, I'll eat Nigel's wig. :D

I definitely wouldn't call it 'cheesy'. Depressing is the word I would use. It's one of the few songs that I would switch the radio off for as it upsets me so much.

What is the exact definition of "cheesy"? Is it "twee/stupid/childish" or something different? I actually enjoy "Lets do the Time Warp again", but having said that I am a 'fan of The Rocky Horror musical. I also agree that "Billy don't be a hero" is not all that bad. It was a big hit when I was at school and why it sticks in my mind is that one of my classmates used to sing it constantly, despite the fact that she was totally unable to sing in tune (similar to the infamous Florence Foster Jenkins!!) and it was only thanks to the lyrics that we could decipher what song she was trying to sing. As children can be thoughtless we constantly asked her to sing and then laughed out loud at her efforts. In those days I had the impression that she did not mind and enjoyed the attention, but now I am not so sure!
