It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

What a brilliant thing to do, Sue! I hope you had a good birthday this year. I thought of you the other day, we climbed to the top of the tower/base of the spire of Salisbury Cathedral. At the end of the tour, we were presented with badges saying that we had been "behind the scenes of Salisbury Cathedral." Almost better than a Blue Peter badge (but probably not as good as a Famous Five badge)!Susan Webster wrote:Hi I have 2 birthdays too. Which guide did you have, Nigel? I did the Salisbury Cathedral tower tour in the summer with my son, daughter and daughter's friend. The guide was a man named Harold who had an extensive knowledge of the cathedral and its environs and went forty-five minutes over the allotted time, which suited us as the whole tour was fascinating. Harold only had the four of us so we were able to ask as many questions as we liked, all of which he was able to answer. We were most impressed and I longed to be able to climb up the maze of old wooden scaffolding leading right up inside the spire itself! There are some good photos (not mine!) here:

We had a lovely lady as our guide, Anita - sadly her name escapes me. There were just the three of us - it was my eighty-one year old brother's idea to climb the tower. He had a major heart attack a year or so ago - with three stents inserted. Had we known what was involved, we would probably not had done it! However, thanks to the skills of Inverness Hospital, he made it to the top. Thanks for providing the link - they were really good photographs.
There is a short video included on the Salisbury Cathedral website.

Thanks for the video link, Nigel, and I'm glad your brother managed the climb okay!

Thanks for the video, Nigel — I'm also glad your brother managed the climb! I did the Salisbury Cathedral tower tour some time in 2013 (can't remember who the guide was after so long) and also loved it. Recently, I also climbed the tower with the third tallest spire in England — Coventry Cathedral, whose original tower survived the bombing in 1940 and is still used as the cathedral's bell tower, alongside the new edifice built after the war. Also an amazing place to visit and very moving.
(For the record, the second tallest spire in England is Norwich Cathedral, but either they don't offer tower tours or I've neglected to do that one despite several visits!!)
