Yes, Shine was a huge hit in Australia when I was 14 and an eager piano student... I never quite mastered the "Rach 3" myself, though. :mrgreen:

On another note (sorry), a friend just sent me this interesting snippet: André Rieu gives the premiere performance of a waltz that was written some 50 years ago (but never played) by a young musician who ended up becoming an actor instead. If you haven't seen it before, you may be surprised to discover who the composer is! 8)

I really enjoyed listening to that, a really nice piece of music. I also enjoyed listening to the introduction. I'd forgotten just how much I love listening to German. The first time I didn't look at the subtitles, and tried to work out what was being said. I got the very basics. I think it's time I brushed up on my German, I wonder if my Dad still has all his Kontakte tapes.......

There are some decent free language-learning websites on the internet these days, Katharine - my dad introduced me to Duolingo when we were working on some basic French (for a trip to Paris), and I found it quite fun and helpful. They certainly offer German and a number of other European languages.

Back to songs - in the car this afternoon, Classic FM played this new choral piece, which I found absolutely beautiful: Will Todd "No More Sorrow"

Excellent choices of music, Pete and Bannerman. :D

I've just been listening to Why Little Girl by Shane Fenton (Alvin Stardust) and the Fentones - the B-side of It's All Over Now - from 1962:

A great rockin' track. :D

Pete MacLaine and the Clan - Yes, I Do (1963)

http://vid1303.photobucket.com/albums/a ... bsuddc.mp4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This group came from Manchester. This record wasn't a hit. The song was recorded by Freddie and the Dreamers as a track on their first LP.

The Shadows - Mustang

http://vid1303.photobucket.com/albums/a ... jseyal.mp4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This was a track on the UK #1 EP 'The Shadows' from 1961.

[An EP (extended play) was a 45rpm 7inch vinyl record with two (occasionally three) tracks per side. Similar to the maxi single in the 1980s]

Joe Brown and the Bruvvers - The Switch (1961)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8xighbKmD4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This was the 'B' side of Joe's record 'Shine' (UK #33). Joe was born in Swarby, Lincolnshire in 1941, but his family moved to Plaistow in London when he was quite young. He formed a group called The Spacemen Skiffle Group in 1956 and worked as a fireman on steam trains for two years.
In 1958 he was hired by Jack Good as lead guitarist for the house band on his 'Boy Meets Girl' TV show, the successor to 'Oh Boy'.
It seems Joe was backed by session musicians on all his early records, including this one, but they were billed as the 'Bruvvers'. The regular group only came into being in1962, when Joe started touring. According to Wikipedia, Jack Good thought up the name, but I've heard Joe say that he did, because when he was on the railways he and his colleagues were all in the Union (ASLEF) and usually addressed each other as 'Bruv'. [I'd better explain that 'Bruvver' is a Cockney pronunciation of 'Brother'.]

Cool...my father loves that tune - he often listens to it.

I've been listening to
Little Devil - Neil Sedaka

I like the Neil Sedaka track, Farwa. :D

Here is another good one by Neil - the B-side of his big 1959 hit Oh Carol - One Way Ticket :

A great track which I prefer to the A-side. :D

Julie Rogers - Like a Child (December 1964 UK #21)

http://vid1303.photobucket.com/albums/a ... wtbodk.mp4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

She was born Julie Rolls in Bermondsey, London. This was the follow-up to her enormous international hit, "The Wedding".

Thank you, Eddie, and Farwa. :)

I've always loved these tracks, but seeing them performed live, just makes 'em sound sweeter. :D

Bee Gees - You Win Again (1987)

Can you believe this was No1 in the UK charts on this day back in 1987! :shock:
