Re: Your favourite holiday location.
I agree. Anglesey is a nice destination for a holiday. We stayed here with our Labrador Alfie a couple of years ago and had a great time.

Talking of Pembrokeshire castles - Manorbier is one of my favourites, and in a great location with a lovely beach below it!

The Highlands of Scotland is one of my favourite holiday locations. I also love spending time in my hometown, Stourport-on-Severn, which is a lovely river resort steeped in history.
'Go down to the side-shows by the river this afternoon. I'll meet you somewhere in disguise. Bet you won't know me!' wrote Fatty.

We went to Trearddur Bay (after visiting South Stack Lighthouse) on a school trip when I was nine, Pete. A very Famous Five-ish day!
Thinking about British locations, the Lake District is one of my favourite places because of the gorgeous scenery and literary connections.

Agree about the lake district. Its a most beautiful area, especially the lakes that are a bit further away from the tourist spots! Dove Cottage and Hill Top are two places I love.

The view from the living room.
Yes,the Lake District is lovely.
We can get there fairly quickly (around 90mins) and we usually stay here:

We've been going to this spot since the late 1980's.One year we left some oven chips in the Aga for a whole week by mistake - they were burnt to a crisp!!

Re: Your favourite holiday location.
Stunning location, Pete! I've not been to the Lake District that often. I must make the effort to rectify this. I used to spent a lot of time walking the North Welsh mountains, which were easy to access from where I was based in Beddgelert. South Stack was a favourite haunt, as well. I can remember visiting the lighthouse when it first re-opened to the public after years of being closed. You got a free tour of the lighthouse thrown in as well. I think it was about £2 back then, & you paid at the cafe on the cliff top. The price crep't steadily up each year. Not been back for years, so I imagine it's nearer £10 now!

Absolutely beautiful, Rob! I think I've mentioned in a previous post that Alfred Bestall, who used to be an illustrator for the Rupert the Bear books, used to live in a lovely little cottage in Beddgelert!Rob Houghton wrote:Beddgelert is another lovely place! We visited his grave.

Re: Your favourite holiday location.
This is a great thread!
We love Beddgelert too and have stayed in this cosy little cottage, right next to the river:
Riverside Cottage, Beddgelert
https://www.sts-holidays.co.uk/property.html?id=2005_ST" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Beddgelert gets really busy during the day,but we found after about 6pm (out of season) everyone goes home and it's really quite peaceful in the village.
Again,it takes us less than 90mins to get there so we are always torn between going to The Lakes or North Wales sometimes.

Tis a lovely cottage, Pete. I know this little scene quite well. I used to dangle my feet in the flowing river mor or less opposite the cottages, & let its icy fingers refresh my aching feet after a day on the Mountains. Ah, the good old days!

Erika and I love the Lakes too. We usually stay near Keswick and Derwent Water. A short boat trip across the lake leads to the starting point for the trek up Cat Bells which affords beautiful views across the valley and over to Bassenthwaite Lake.

Never done the Cat Bells, John. Fancied the challenge, though, after seeing it featured in Julia Bradbury's Wainwright walks.

Re: Your favourite holiday location.
I love Derwent Water, John. I once stayed in the Youth Hostel there one Easter and was lucky enough to have dry, sunny weather. I've also been hiking in various parts of the Lake District (Eskdale, Wasdale, Patterdale and elsewhere). As a child I visited places like Kendal, Windermere, Tarn Hows, Coniston, Cartmel and Grange-over-Sands while staying with my grandparents who lived in Preston, Lancashire. Sadly I didn't discover Arthur Ransome's 'Swallows and Amazons' books until I was in my mid thirties, but it would have been wonderful to read them in the Lakes.
