Selected illustrations from Enid's books

Post by pete9012S »

Yes, please share any illustrations you particularly enjoy from Enid's books here.
The cave is jam packed with beautiful artwork - and also Betty Maxey pics too..

I'm sure I recognise this pic. Has it been used as a front cover for The Journal?

I don't think it has been used as a Journal cover, Pete, but it's beautiful. I've always liked Grace Lodge's work. Her dustwrapper for Those Dreadful Children is stunning (sadly, I only have a paperback copy!)

I presume Grace would have coloured those covers herself.

Though her B&W illustrations are fine, the detail and colour on the covers are just beautiful.

Here's todays illustration.
I don't seem to recall seeing this cover before.

I had this version when young:

I love the Mary Gernat cover (front and back). Her illustrations are sketchy but full of life and movement.

I have always loved the illustrations of George and Timmy together, showing the love between them - especially some wonderful ones from Five Go Adventuring Again... :P

Lovely Eileen Soper illustrations. I also like this picture of George and Timmy by Betty Maxey. It shows the close bond between them while conveying a feeling of watchfulness and tension - adventure is afoot!

Yes, Anita. I've always liked that one as well.

I've got all the FF books in the Knight paperback editions with some surprisingly decent Betty Maxey covers. The illustrations are a mix, sometimes Maxey, other times Soper - and the difference is quite clear! Over time I've got them all in hardback, all with Eileen Soper's wonderful illustrations - so I don't read the paperback versions much anymore.

I don't think these illustrations are in the cave.

Someone has coloured in the above pic!

Can anyone guess the book these pics belong to?

Just a guess, I haven’t checked. Is it ‘Before I Go To Sleep’?

Well done Kate Mary - correct!

I noticed this 1981 Hodder hardback edition on ebay, which I can't spot in the cave:

I've never seen the later version, Pete, but I do have a Latimer House edition. It has no dustwrapper and is a bit worse for wear, but the Grace Lodge illustrations are charming. Tony used that colour plate as a Journal cover some years ago - it's a lovely, cosy scene.

I haven’t seen this mentioned elsewhere on the forums, apologies if it has. Tony has added the jacket illustrations (love the pictures on the jacket flaps) and plates from the first four Holiday Books, they are absolutely gorgeous, I have all the Holiday Books but none have a dj and I think I’m missing a few of the plates as well. Thanks awfully Tony, I’m looking forward to seeing the rest in due course.
