All the colour illustrations are really lovely.
Except maybe that last one. It looks weird when highlighted on its' own. As did many others from that publisher (from books by any author).

I agree that some of the Merlin covers look oddly grim.
Of the black line drawings, the 1973 Dean & Son one is the best for me as it looks so natural. The ones by Jessie Land, Dorothy Brook and Clyde Pearson are pretty good too.
Looking at the covers, the Newnes cover is the most appealing in my opinion as it's full of life and movement. The Armada and Dean covers are very attractive as well, but the Merlin one is drab and depressing.

This one is from one of the Galliano books but it is by Clyde Pearson. I don't hate his work - the examples in the Adventurous 4 threads have been ok. Sometimes they are just very odd, though.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Thanks Fiona.
I'm finding it hard to track down many examples of his work.
I've just found out he passed away not too long ago and posted a bit about it:
