Tom Adams - Enid Blyton Portrait

He was commissioned to create numerous portraits, including paintings of Benjamin Britten, Federico Fellini, and Enid Blyton. His work is featured in The Museum of Modern Art and a number of galleries, and his paintings can also be found in many private collections.

Thought I would post this in its own thread for those who may not have seen it before.
It will also be easier to find in the illustrators sections of the forums.

I enjoy looking at that portrait as there's a great deal woven into it, showing so many aspects of Enid Blyton's life and work. It's a pity we can't see a really big version. I was trying to work out whether the circus and farm books are represented but I don't think they are. I particularly like the Faraway Tree and the fantail pigeons.

One thing that jars is Amelia Jane, as the doll depicted is a later creation. The original Amelia Jane doll which inspired the stories looked quite different - a photo of it can be seen on page 9 of The Story of My Life.

I enjoy looking at it too. It would be marvelous to have it on the wall of my library.

I think it would probably be one of those paintings where someone could spot something different every time they looked at it.

I'm just wondering what the building is on the right hand side?

I'm wondering if it is Seckford Hall near Woodbridge.

I did try to zoom in but couldn't see enough detail.

I'm sure it is Seckford Hall. Enid used to stay there with the Hunt family.

Certainly some very similar characteristics.

Enlargement from above picture, albeit blurred.

Tom Adams is the front cover illustrator of the Fontana issues of Agatha Christie novels, they’re always full of detail and some of them were very macabre! I was fascinated and scared of them when I was little. Yes, it’s definitely Seckford Hall, I live very close by, and I’m certain that’s right.

I was, Susie. I've been retired for over 11 years now. However, I did my boat building in Norfolk alongside the Broads but the boats (sea-going yachts) were launched nearer to you in Ipswich.

Thanks Anita - that's what made me wonder if it was that building, as I knew of the connection.

Thanks Boatbuilder for the close up. I drive past Seckford Hall on my way to work, but it's mostly hidden behind trees, and so I can only get a glimpse of it, and obviously I need to keep my focus on the road, so can't have a proper look. :)

Interesting to see we have another Suffolk resident on the forums (Susie9598). :)
