Enid used many illustrators in her books. Discuss them here.

Your welcome Stephen I

On doing further research re Betty Maxey I came across a wikipedia link today and it shows that a Betty Ladler also illustrated for Enid Blyton mmm?? and also Noel Streatfeild.

I wonder now if Betty Ladler is also Betty Maxey ????? Betty Maxey being the pen name that is.

Re Betty Ladley her actual name is Mary (Betty*) Newmarsh Woolcock born 1904 in Hendon Middlesex and died 2004 in Coombe Gloucstershire. ( BTW its Newmarch according to ancestry records)

The name (Betty*) she added herself it is not recorded in any legal records.

You will notice in the link below if you scroll down she illustrated a book for Noel Streatfeild as well even tho it should be 1959 it says Noel Streatfeild's Ballet Annual (1957) (written by Noel Streatfeild).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_Ladler

Too much of a coincidence that they illustrated for both authors in the same era and the misleading names.

I love comparing Betty Maxey and Eileen Soper......

Unlike many,I'm happy to have both illustrators and just love comparing the pictures that they drew of The Famous Five...I know many will disagree, but that's ok-I understand why they love Eileen the best!!

Great album Pete, I've left a couple of comments on it.

Are you going to do all the books you've got?

If you want to use the pictures and write about comparing them for the blog we'd be happy to post it :)

Yes....problem is,there's just not a lot of writing involved with this little project...
Its mainly a pictorial comparison using only the illustrations that correlate to each other in the books.(many illustrations in both editions are left out as they have no direct match with each other...)

That's why I wasn't sure if it would suit your blog...not much words, but plenty of pictures..
It's a subject that fascinates me,but I'm not sure how much it is of interest to anyone else!

If I do them all and you want to give them a long term home on your blog I don't mind removing them from facebook and linking to them via your World Of Blyton Blog??

Anyway, open to suggestions/ideas if you and Stef want to have a talk about it and think the project is of any use to your blog...

In the meantime I will keep scanning and comparing them!

Regards

Pete

It's definitely of interest (to me anyway) especially from the fairly unique stance where you like both illustrators. There needn't be screeds of writing, really, just a couple of hundred words - a brief intro and then a short caption of what scene is in the illustrations and maybe the odd opinion and style comparison?

I find the only things I can think of to say are in the little caption boxes next to the pics..and even that's not much, and is mainly just tongue in cheek!

Maybe if I keep doing them you could do a small feature on them...(The best of Eileen Soper v Betty Maxey etc) or pick highlights from the comparison pics that you both like for your blog or even just provide a link to them on my page if you think any blog readers would find them interesting!

It would probably be a lot quicker to write about the pictures than scanning them one by one ...now I know how Tony feels...its takes a long time to scan and compile and they are then read and viewed in seconds!

Thank you for doing this Pete; it's great to be able to do a direct comparison. As I've said before Eileen Soper is the definitive Five illustrator for me, but I like some of Maxey's illustrations too, as my first Fives had both illustrations. One thing that really strikes me looking at this, is that regardless of anything else Maxey's Uncle Quentin, Aunt Fanny and Timmy are just WRONG! However I am impressed with the Maxey cover of Five on a Treasure Island. I appreciate the time it must take to do this - organising my avatar seemed a Herculean task - but I very much look forward to the rest of the series.
