I started school aged three and a half - I think my Mum wanted a bit of peace!!

I would suspect that the children are going to private/boarding schools, as it says that Jane and Jack are going back on different days. In my experience, boys and girls attended the same primary schools, and were only separated by sex once they went to secondary/grammar school.

From the description of the house they live in, and the fact that they have a live-in maid, I can't imagine the family 'roughing it' by sending their children to the local school.

Benjy and the Others is a sweet little story, thank you to Tony for adding the last three chapters yesterday. Despite it being 60 years since I last read it I remembered the bit about the moving staircase and the trip to the Zoo.
