Coronation Bible - 1953

Post by Rob Houghton »

Saw this on eBay today - a 'Coronation Bible' with a message by Enid Blyton.

Is this a genuine hand-written message, or one that was printed in each of these bibles? Just wondered if anyone knew! 8)
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Hi Barney, Clearing out my mother's effects I discovered a 1953 Coronation Bible which has a dedication from Enid Blyton in the front. It looks original and I know that there are others. Are these inscriptions original or are they facsimilies ? Thanks.

Barney says: I believe that all the Coronation Bibles had a dedication from Enid Blyton printed in the front. A nice item to have, though.

The seller has included a fantastic disclaimer, though.

I cannot guarantee that this is 'The Enid Blyton' or indeed her signature, but you must make up your own mind and bid accordingly. Do not buy it and then complain that it is not her signature, as I am not advertising/listing it as her signature.

That's one item I would consider bidding for, if it doesn't go too much above the price it currently is. I'm going to keep an eye on it. I won't mind if I don't get it, but I'm just letting you guys know in case any of you are considering it too — I don't want to get in a bidding war with friends.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

This is quite a common book and I have been asked about it numerous times over the years. All copies have that printed message in them and it shouldn't really sell for all that much, but for some reason almost all sellers say it is handwritten in black ink by Enid - not true! It is worth a bit more in a wrapper but this is often not present.

I bought the 'Coronation Number' of Enid Blyton's Magazine the other day on eBay, and reading it today I was interested to see what Enid had written about this bible, hinting that some of the bibles might very well have ended up having hand written versions of the original note pasted in them! In 'Our News Sheet' Enid writes -

"I have had many letters from children who have had Coronation Bibles given to them before they read the notice in our magazine - and they are sad because these particular Bibles have not got my message and signature in them. Well, please write in and tell me if you'd like the same message that I have put in the Bibles you sent up for through our magazine and I will at once write it out and send it to you."

I wonder if there are any with hand-written notes in the front of them?! 8)

I noticed another copy of the Coronation Bible turned up in Pickering Yorkshire recently. According to the Yorkshire Post it has been sold by an antiques dealer for £350. Let's hope the purchaser doesn't search these forums for information about it!
