Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
I'm just in the process of buying The Family at Red Roofs. I must have read this before, but not for many years, so I am quite pleased, as it will fit in with that lovely little group of one-off books ie The House at the Corner, Six Bad Boys, The Put-em Rights and Six Dreadful Children.

Re: What is your favourite school series?
It's so hard to choose between Malory Towers and St Clare's. In the end I voted for St Clare's, but have already changed my mind. I feel that MT has a greater range of interesting characters and relationships; those faithful and loyal friends Darrell and Sally; witty sharp-tongued Alicia; timid, shy...

Re: What Enid Blyton book are you reading right NOW!
I liked The Enchanted Wood, there was some very clever stuff in it but I found the huge coincidences quite annoying. It's your birthday? Oh look the Land of Birthdays will be arriving soon. Oh, Wizard, you need a hundred servants? We just happen to have a hundred red goblins... and so on. Circus of...

Re: What Enid Blyton book are you reading right NOW!
That's the very Bounty Book of Those Dreadful Children, Pete! I rather like the cover myself, although there is something very special about the older ones. My copy looks unread, and as it was from a charity shop, I find that rather sad because it was probably given to some child who just didn't app...

Re: What Enid Blyton book are you reading right NOW!
Hooray! Found 'Those Dreadful Children', again in a charity shop. I haven't read this one for years, but loved it when I did and have been meaning to get it for ages. I've just finished it and enjoyed it just as much as before. It's quite a nice paperback by Bounty Books and I don't THINK it's been ...

I bought this book from a charity shop and was delighted to find it, as it is one that I have never read before. Any thoughts on this book?

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
I did end up buying one of the copies of The Land of Far-Beyond from eBay (after saying I didn't think I would!) — basically, after looking at some of the hysterical prices that some copies, even a few in worse condition, were going for, I decided £32.00 was quite reasonable after all. I can see no...

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
I love the Milly Molly Mandy books. Wonderful stories of days gone by with wonderful illustrations. Yes, wonderful stories indeed. I like the one where MMM has to go shopping without a shopping list and still succeeds. But my favorite is the one with Willy and staying over night in the self-made te...

Re: What Enid Blyton book have you recently bought?
I believe that EB was influenced by the progressive and democratic Summerhill. Have you tried the follow-ons of The Naughtiest Girl by other authors? Is this something you would consider? I've read a couple, but not really keen. They are terribly short, for one thing.

Re: Policemen in Enid Blyton
Thanks both of you. Of course, you're quite right Rob - you can see the influence of the popular ideas of the day and I had not thought of this. However, if I you or I had hung around with children who actually played practical jokes on the police...Can you imagine??
