Re: Malory Towers TV series

I was arguing that British boarding schools in the 1940s would have had very few people of colour. I still don't see how that has anything to do with politics. Then I can't help you. I gave you 5 paragraphs about why critiquing the use of PoC in modern TV is *entirely* political - and reflects the ...

Re: Malory Towers TV series

Sadly the rise of UKIP, Brexit-supporters and the "anti-woke" idiots (who haven't got a clue what woke actually means or represents, just as they never understood what "politically correct" meant but brandished the words like a weapon) tragically means that casual (and not so ca...

Re: Malory Towers TV series

I wonder if any black characters are ever played by white actors. Imagine if a film about Mandela was played by a white actor. Colourblind casting seems to be a one-way street unless I'm mistaken. And so it should be. "Colourblind casting" is about redressing an unbalance in the arts and ...

Tim, I'm pretty certain the circus was set up opposite Gatewood, just the otherside of the big shed, in those fields there

Re: TV locations for the Famous Five series

Just to clear up, Tim, I didn't mean to imply the other day that the actual circus sets were behind the woods at the foot of GH's garden in reality, merely that we used those woods to film in, for the journey *to* the circus, narratively. The actual circus was set up elsewhere. I vaguely recall that...

Re: The 77/78 TV series: Little mistakes and special moments

i'm pretty positive those are not FF books - no one would have been that meta back then, indeed that would have been frowned upon both by the producers and by the Blyton people. I think they are genuine school books, probably maths or science.

Re: Julian - What do you think of him?

After being deluged with an avalanche of requests to see the 1974 Betty Maxey - Five Go Down To The Sea illustrations, I post them here for your perusal. Can't beat a bit of Maxey. Never occurred to me that its her illos of Anne with the Aliceband that led to the tv version of Anne having one.

Re: New Famous Five Graphic Novel - Feb 2022

The term first came to mainstream use 40 years ago when they started turning up in mainstream bookshops in 1982, although the comics industry had been using the term since the late 70s.

Re: Five Have a Mystery to Solve

I would have liked to see a version done in 1978, though I don't know if filming was possible on Brownsea that early I dont think access to Brownsea would have mattered in 78. We’d have no need/money to lug cast and crew and equipment to the island by boat, it would have just been shot around Exbur...
