Re: Codes and code-breaking in Enid Blyton
You might be thinking of The Mystery That Never Was , Liz, which includes a note written using a Caesar cipher - a type of substitution cipher in which each letter of text is replaced by a letter a certain number of positions further along in the alphabet. In this particular case B takes the place ...

Codes and code-breaking in Enid Blyton
Hello! It's been a while since I posted here. I do drop by occasionally and see there are still some familiar names. :D I'm sure that as a kid I read an Enid Blyton mystery book that involved creating a code, or possibly cracking a code. It might have been a Five Find-Outers or a Secret Seven or one...

Thanks, Moonraker!
It's good, though, that you never had a murder at the Society days!

Re: Hachette Reverting to Classic Text for the Famous Five!
Charles Hamilton who wrote (amongst many others) the Greyfriars stories used 'japes' quite a lot in the earlier stories. This was sometime before Enid's main series started and it was out of fashion by then (as was "ripping" and other school slang words) . Perhaps at some stage a journali...

Re: Edward Chitham - Ghost in the Water
This book is set in and around my home town (Rowley Regis) and the author was a teacher at my school (though a few years before my time). He hasn't written any more fiction, but he's written a few local history books.

Re: Federal election in Australia
I'm in the La Trobe electorate, one of Victoria's key marginals for the federal election, so I'm sure we'll be seeing all the leaders visiting our area, promising stuff.

Thanks, Anita - I don't remember the Jacksons at all, though I know I read the book.

Re: The Family at Red-Roofs
When I was a kid, I thought The Family at Red-Roofs would be about the Pat, Isabel and Alison O'Sullivan from St Clare's, because the school they'd attended before St Clare's was called Red-Roofs. I was disappointed when I discovered it wasn't a boarding-school story. I can't remember anything...

Re: Could Enid have been a better writer?
I also think that Enid may well have written less, or indeed, may have written nothing , if she had revised as much as many modern-day novelists do, because I think she would have become bored with her creations. Imagine revising a Famous Five book over and over until it was perfect? she would have...

Have to admit I'm a bit wary of sending my signature via email. I'd be happy to add my name to a letter or petition, but don't want to scan my signature.

Is this something that could be crowdfunded so it could be purchased and run as a Blyton museum?

Re: Home-Made Games Based on Blyton Books
Wow, these games look great, Robert. I particularly like the Naughtiest Girl one - that would have been huge fun to play as a kid. What a shame they weren't produced commercially - I'd buy them all.

Re: Why did Enid have so many publishers?
I think it probably was to do with paper rationing too, though it's not uncommon for authors to have more than one publisher, especially if they are popular. Enid would no doubt have been approached by publishers to write a series for them. Illustrators are commissioned by the publishers, rather tha...
