Re: What became of George? - Gender Issues
Genuine question - has Paul ever said anything positive about Enid on here?

Re: What became of George? - Gender Issues
I'm all for social justice and equality but I don't see what transgender issues has to with George and Enid's writing.Paul Austin wrote:Geez, I stick up for the sensitivities of minorities and suddenly I'm a member of that minority?
My heart belongs to Enid Blyton. Social justice and I are just friends.

Re: Degrees of danger
Of the three main Blyton books that I'm most familiar with - Famous Five, Secret Seven and Find Outers, I would say that the children always risked danger, merely because of the nature of the books and the fact they were based on adventures involving villains. In Famous Five, Timmy would sometimes b...

Re: What became of George? - Gender Issues
Deej: What's wrong with transgender people seeing George as one of their own if it gives them comfort? Nothing, if they want to, then that's fine with me. In this context, however, George is not in anyway portrayed as a transgender. As John has put more articulately than myself, George is a tomboy ...

Re: What became of George? - Gender Issues
Many transgender people consider George as a trans boy and role model - they are well within their rights to do so , of course I somehow don't think Enid thought of George as a transgender character. That is an extremely tenuous link to say the least and I'm questioning if that's a serious comment ...

Re: Research Topic: How old were the Famous Five?
The age of the children never really mattered much to me reading the books. I read the books for the enjoyment, and as others have said, like timeless adventure stories. I'm aware that references are made to the ages of the children, however, in Treasure Island (?), but I'm not sure how old the chil...

All this talk of Secret Seven has made me want to start reading the series again, so that's what I'm going to do again!

Re: Circus Animals
We've done quite a lot of coverage on Thomas Chipperfield's big cat show at the newspaper I work for. The show has toured around a number of different places in North Wales - Wrexham, Llanwnda, near Caernarfon and Penrhyn Bay, to name a few. The shows have attracted a number of protests from animal ...

Re: What Enid Blyton book are you reading right NOW!
 - Deej - I think Nigel was referring to the 'bland titles' rather than the plots! ;-) Oh sorry, my mistake. I would agree that some of the titles of the books he mentions are equally as bland  I don't quite agree with you that the plots of the Secret Seven books are 'bland' though - many...

Re: What Enid Blyton book are you reading right NOW!
What, compared to Five Have Plenty of Fun, Five Are Together Again, Five Have a Wonderful Time, Five Get Into Trouble........ Yes, I actually enjoy all those books except for Five Are Together Again. I'd say Five Get Into Trouble is one of the best books in the series with the brilliantly at...

Re: What Enid Blyton book are you reading right NOW!
I enjoy the Secret Seven Series, just as I do with any Enid Blyton series. But, as an adult, I find the books a little short for my liking and the titles and plots rather bland in comparison to Famous Five and Find Outers. It's also more difficult to warm to some of the characters, as throughout the...

Re: Famous Five 90s Series
This is how Timmy is described in Five On A Treasure Island. "As a dog, Timothy was far from perfect. He was the wrong shape, his head was too big,his ears were too pricked, his tail was too long and it was quite impossible to say what kind of a dog he was supposed to be. But he was such a mad,...

I always had Timmy down as being a grey, shaggy type dog. It's funny how we picture things differently.
