Re: Angela in St Clare's

Yeah - it did seem for a while that Angela might be going to change though. I think she was actually worse in the final book than the fifth one .. and four or five terms must have elapsed between them.      At one point she actively enjoys causing misery and unhappiness to the younger ones who &quo...

Re: Famous Five Fluffs

I promised earlier to post an explanation about plot holes I'd found in two Famous Five books, if requested - and I have been requested.      However, I have very limited time now, so I will just outline in the briefest form what the issues are, which may be sufficient to prompt anyone familiar...

Re: Enid Blyton books impacting on adults.

I found a Facebook page belonging to Sean Turnell, the man in the above story who got into trouble in Myanmar, and I posted on it, seeing that others had also done likewise, and thus concluding that Sean seemed quite amenable to talking about his ordeal on Facebook.      I asked him how many Fa...

Re: Find-Outer Matters

Then, there's also the fact that in each of Enid Blyton's series, the core group of children tends to be maintained throughout the series. Even when a character who is not part of the group becomes a recurring character in the series, he or she is not really 100% part of the core group, social equa...

Re: Find-Outer Matters

I always felt that Ern, though he was welcomed by the Five, was nonetheless looked down on because of social class      Yes, I think you can definitely see signs of this in the first book where Ern appears especially, but I think it weakened rather as the series progresses and they get to know Ern ...

Re: Angela in St Clare's

Okay, Anita, I will do that, and put it where you suggest - but I need to get some sleep first (been up all night, and need to sleep before I write the description).

Re: Enid Blyton books impacting on adults.

........really love escaping into the light hearted worlds of Enid and PG (Wodehouse, not Tips :) ). Why not? A nice cup of tea at the same time should go down a treat. :D      Well, not tea for me. It would be iced coffee or iced mocha for me, because (perhaps oddly) I do not drink hot drinks at a...

Re: TV Programmes

Watching old TV shows is a bit like reading old Blytons. Comfort food for those of us getting older.      I have never owned a television, and when I was living with my family for the first 17 or so years of my life, I rarely showed much interest in watching television shows, although there were a ...

Re: Angela in St Clare's

I think (not just in the school books - and well before she became ill) Enid forgot a few things. She really could have done with an assistant to point out a few errors or vagaries at times. Most of her editors at publishing companies would hardly have bothered to read the books and not noticed tha...

Re: Angela in St Clare's

Angela seems to learn a lesson and to resolve to be a better person from then on but - in the last book of the series she seems even worse than ever, spoiled and selfish and being awful to the younger girls. Why did Enid decide to change her - and then change her back to her awful self?      I cann...

Re: Journal 82

The local children's section - 'Possum's Pages' (makes me think of Edna Everage - Barry was a book collector and a memorable customer) - of the Sunday paper published a number of my short stories.      I remember Possum's pages - you must have been in Adelaide then, Judith. My first couple of decad...

Re: Journal 82

Ooh, I like the sound of "Demon Island, an Australian Blytonesque Adventure" by Judith Crabb! :D Looking forward to reading that one, thanks, Judith.      So I take it that that is a review of a book, not a complete short story. I am interested in that, too.      In fact, over the years I...

Re: English Grammar, Spelling and Vocabulary

To me, without the comma, it makes the last two items feel more strongly connected to each other than with the other preceding adjacent pairs.
That's probably why I favour the serial comma, although I don't quite remember now when or why I initially adopted it.

Regards, Michael.

Serial comma (Oxford/Harvard comma) - endangered?

I think I can hardly trawl through all 144 pages of this thread to see if this has already been discussed (perhaps to death), but I am prompted to raise the issue of the serial comma - that is, when a list of usually nouns (but it can be verbs, adjectives, or adverbs) occurs, with most of them ...
