Re: Favourite Malory Towers book
[quote="chloe1"]In the fifth was the first one I read and is one of my favourite EB books ever! I love the pantomime and the ending makes me cry every time. I like the ending with the pantomime too. The best book of the series for me is the Second Form, it feels different from all the othe...

The Wishing Chair
Thoughts? I loved the idea of a flying chair..I could never understand why it wasn't spotted flying about though.or did people just turn a blind eye to it, lol I really liked some of the lands they visited, especially The Land of Spells. (By the way, apologies if a Wishing chair thread has been done...

Re: Just to be really sad .. I 'ship' Fatty and Daisy!
I went through a period of pairing off the Secret Seven (with Susie thrown in to make up the numbers) Janet and Jack were made for each other, I felt.. Peter went with the outgoing Pam at first but then found himself more interested in the quieter Barbara..(Pam was a bit upset but got over it) Colin...

Re: Anyone like pony books?
And they try to pretend that men and women are now equal! What's that supposed to mean? I know I shouldn't have started talking about wild stallions. I forgot to mention 'Cobbler's Dream' by Monica Dickens, the inspiration for the 'Follyfoot' TV series. Good book..kind of different fro...

Re: Anyone like pony books?
Great topic :). I read lots and lots of Pullein-Thompson books as a kid. I liked the Pony Patrol books by Christine, and the stories involving Christina and Augusta by Diana. Augusta was a great character: so resourceful yet so scatter-brained! I really liked her. I also really liked 'The Lost Pony'...

Re: The Three Investigators
I absolutely loved the Three Investigator books as a kid! I used to buy them and devour them in about a couple of hours. I especially liked the earlier books in the series, with the original writer (Robert Arthur?) Wonderfully spooky goings-on..(even if that annoying Jupe was always able to expose t...

Re: Hans Christian Andersen
Very sad stories, some of them, and some are downright disturbing ('The Shadow'), but always so interesting. A lot of humour too. Astonishing how much impact these stories have had, with phrases like 'Emperor's new Clothes' and Ugly Duckling having passed into common use. Other personal favourites, in...

Re: Nancy Drew
I used to get fed up of the Nancy Drew books when the ghosts and stuff always turned out to be fake
The Three Investigators were a lot better (although the ghosts there used just to be fake too of course!)

Re: Did MT fail Gwen? Did Gwen fail MT?
I always thought that it was Gwen's father who got the worst of that particular deal .. fancy having to spend the rest of your life crippled and being waited on by Gwen, Miss Winter and Mrs Lacey!! yes, but she had to live with her conscience ... Poor Mr Lacy, but finally he got a more dutiful daug...

Re: Did MT fail Gwen? Did Gwen fail MT?
In my opinion, it was a mistake on Enid's part to devote so much time to painting a negative picture of Gwen throughout the series. It used to puzzle me, in fact, that the author really seemed to have it in for her and give her practically no redeeming qualities...she just got so villainous in the l...

Re: The Famous Five - why are they so popular?
9) I think many readers would love to own an island and castle like George - I know I would:) . Also I would LOVE to own a lighthouse like that boy Tinker in 'Demon's Rocks'. I liked his funny wee monkey Mischief too :) Personally, this series wasn't among my favourites (although I liked certain in...

Re: Roald Dahl
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator was my favourite Roald Dahl book as a child and still is. Some of the dialogue and the characterization...just completely and utterly hilarious. Especially the President of the United States talking with the Chief of the Army, and his Chief Intepreter, etc...
