Re: Frances Hodgson Burnett

I love both of these books too, although I think my favourite has to be A Little Princess. They've been two of my favourite books ever since I was quite little :)
I love the way Sara uses her imagination in A Little Princess, even when she is living in such difficult circumstances.

Re: Blyton plus others picked up today...

I managed to get a Just William book with dj for £0.99 in an Oxfam bookshop on Portobello Road once. I was surprised at the price, as they do generally seem to be overpriced.

Re: Books suitable for a boy aged 7

It depends on his tastes and reading age really, as children can differ quite a lot. However, I would definitely say that The Faraway Tree and Wishing Chair books would be great for a seven year old. I loved them at that age. I think I was also reading The Secret Seven at about that age and moved on...

Re: Blyton plus others picked up today...

I think a lot of good books end up in the hands of dealers. However, I have even read (on another book forum) that some of the more ignorant charity shops put "old, tatty" books straight in the bin, as they don't look good on the shelves  If this is true, I don't like to think what ...

Re: Blyton in other fiction

The Forgotten Garden is a lovely book. I read it a few months ago. Are you enjoying it Ming?

I'm sure I have seen references to Blyton in a few books, but nothing springs to mind at the moment apart from the title you mentioned. I'll keep thinking though.

Re: Positive piece on BBC Breakfast News this morning

Thanks Lucky Star :D I occasionally lurk, but have found little time to post recently as it is very hard work looking after a toddler. He turns 1 next week and will start going to the childminder a bit more often so I can get some work done, so hopefully I will have a little more time to contribute ...

Positive piece on BBC Breakfast News this morning

Did anyone else watch BBC1 Breakfast News this morning? They presented The Famous Five Survival Guide and were very positive about Blyton and her books as a whole. It was so nice to hear people saying good things about her for a change, praising her storytelling abilities and the timeless appeal of ...

That's a tough one. I like both of them. I think I'll have to say Julian though, just because not everyone else likes him

Re: Olympic Games (Beijing 2008)

I'm enjoying the Olympics Viv :D I don't always have time to watch much of it, but have been watching what I can. I've particularly enjoyed the swimming, diving and badminton so far. My favourite sport is tennis, so I'm hoping they will be showing some more of that soon, even if the British hopes ar...

Re: Olympic Games (Beijing 2008)

"Oh, I can't get Sky Sports" wail some people. Well get it then! I appreciate it can be expensive, but the BBC's channels are free, so put the likes of Wimbledon, The Open (Golf) and the Olympics on BBC3. Living where I live in Wiltshire, we can't get digital freeview until 2010 so I woul...

Re: Do any of you like C. S. Lewis?

I love the Narnia books and think Prince Caspian is a very good book. My least favourite (if you can call it that) is "The Horse and His Boy", and my favourite is probably "The Magician's Nephew". I don't think we can say that Susan was excluded from heaven (which is indeed what ...

Re: Coot Club and The Big Six!

I'm now about three-quarters of the way through Swallows and Amazons and although the plot, such as it is, is quite slight, I'm finding the story charming. Anita I think this is where the appeal of these stories lies. Apart from a couple of rather far-fetched exceptions (Missee Lee springs to mind)...

Re: I'm going to be a student midwife!!!

I hope you hear something soon. I think it must be such a rewarding job and there is definitely a shortage of midwives in the country - you'd think they'd be welcoming you with open arms!
