Re: Anniversary of September 11th
The anniversary of 9/11 is always sad here in the U.S. I remember the day vividly. I was teaching young children so couldn't watch any coverage. I just kept getting updates...now the pentagon's been hit, all cell phone towers are out (not true) etc. etc. People were in a panic. Parents rushing to sc...

Re: The Three Golliwogs
I haven't had time to add to this topic in awhile, as I was out of town. It has taken an interesting turn, and an important turn at that. Bullying has become a huge topic in schools here, and about time. I think the school shootings in the U.S. has really made educators sit up and take notice of the...

Re: The Three Golliwogs
I just posted a reply and little while ago, and it seems that it didn't take. Now if it should appear, I apologize for repeating myself. I am not a techie. I will attempt to re-write my entry...it was long the first time. I will try to make it shorter this time. Tiq, it appears that you paint quite ...

Re: A Photograph
Tony is right, of course. Enid Blyton is practically unknown in the United States. Now, Noddy is well-known due to a children's television show. It was quite popular for awhile, but my own children are a bit older so I am unsure of it's current popularity. I don't believe the show references Enid Bl...

Re: The Three Golliwogs
My question is not a joke. I always intended to keep the book, and I do look at it in it's place in history. It actually never dawned on me to discard the book until I took a trip to an African American Museum. I was talking to a curator and some educators. It was their opinion that it should be thr...

The Three Golliwogs
Hello, I hope you can help me. A year or so ago, I purchased The Three Golliwogs on-line. I remembered reading it as a child in the 70s, and thought it would bring back fond memories. When I began reading, I was shocked to see the name of one of the Golliwogs. I don't want to write the name, as it i...

Re: What is your house like?
The subject of on-line predators, cyberstalking etc. is very big in the U.S. or it could be that I am very aware of it because I am a parent. My son is the same age as Ming, and he loves the computer. I don't allow him to enter any chat rooms or give any personal information via the computer. He doe...

Re: Phrases used in Blyton books
....and all these phrases sound so much better with an English accent. I discovered this last night as I was reading Five on a Treasure Island aloud to my son. I have read these books countless times, but never aloud. It just didn't sound right in my American accent. I tried to switch to an English ...

Re: Shopping for Blyton
Thank you so much for your advice. You gave me new titles for which to look, and brought back memories of old ones (Galliano's circus...I remember loving that series). I can't wait to get my children started. I hope they love them as much as I did, and still do!
Thanks again,
Teresa

Shopping for Blyton
Hello everyone, I am hoping that you can help me. I am introducing Enid Blyton to my children, and plan to do a little shopping on ebay and abebooks. I own a number of Famous Five, two of the Barney series, and some of the St. Clare's/MT books already. I was searching through the book listing, and t...

Re: Who's the first celebrity death you can remember?
Elvis Presley...I was thirteen and babysitting when they announced it on t.v. I wasn't really a fan, but understood the impact it had on his fans. I was also obsessed with Paul McCartney's "death." My friends and I would sit and study album covers, play records backwards, etc. etc. Silly, ...

Re: The Dangerous Book for Boys
Nah, it's showing boys how to make paper airplanes, tie various knots, read classic literature, make a water bomb, bows and arrows, baseball (in the U.S. version) statistics, identifying trees etc.... Although I did have to make sure the bow and arrow wasn't aimed at his sister.
