I had a gerbil called Silky. I think she ended up attacking and eating the other gerbil she shared the cage with (Willow)

Re: Parents beware: the awful Blyton is back

Im with Katherine (and sounds like we are same generation - Jason Donovan SWOON! ) The Beatles are boring and were liked by people at school who thought it was cool to like them. I am sure if you were around when they first arrived then it must have been awesome to be part of the Beatlemania b...

Re: Parents beware: the awful Blyton is back

 I HATE The Beatles. I quite like their songs covered by other people I find their own recordings very over rated. That said I know nothing about music. I know more about literature. I like the theory that people spoke badly about Blyton because kids wouldn't read anything else. She is very add...

Re: Parents beware: the awful Blyton is back

I haven't been here for a while but I dropped into read what you are up too and realised this thread has been bugging me all day. With regards to Dahl (with whom I am a little shocked at some of your reactions) I wonder if those who don't connect with his work had the opportunity to read his books a...

Re: Does the High Street Deserve Saving?

As an ex shop keeper I have mixed feelings on this. Sadly the high st cannot save themselves. Not until the greedy landlords reduce the rents by three quarters, not until the greedy councils stop charging for parking, not until the goverment slashes business rates and allows the spoils from them to ...

Re: Five Go To Rehab

I was really disapointed. I felt that none of them had read the books for a very long time and that it was lacking the affection for the 5 that 5 go mad in Dorset had.

Was anyone else getting really annoyed about George being referred to as their sister?

Big big hugs to you Viv. I know what you are going through and I promise once it is all behind you it gets much better. Like me, you have so much if onlys. If only Chorion hadnt been so petty in the start, if only there hadnt been a recession etc. You achieved your dream battling others all the way ...

Re: Naughtiest Girl

I didnt know Anne Digby had written continuation books and was fizzing with excitement until I read that they were not that great. I might have to try one just to see. I do find Whytleafe (sp) set up a little odd and a little unrealistic. As lovely as the idea is of children governing themselves I c...

Re: Was it Alzheimer's?

I have had a few relatives with it too and I honestly dont see how any family can get through without finding aspects to laugh about. Just because someone has dementia doesnt mean you should stop creating happy memories for them or you. and yeah it is so rewarding! Best job in the world and ive only...

Re: Was it Alzheimer's?

I have just read this entire thing through with much amusement and felt the need to comment on a few things. I do not think Enid was "satirising" her dementia through forgetful characters but it is possible she was referring to herself. Most of her scatterbrains were extremely clever at on...

Re: Are you known by a shortened form of your name?

Every shortening and spelling of Chloe under the sun. Most of my friends call me Clo Bo.

I have a friend called Richard who we have all called Titch since school due to his shortish height. His family call him Ra (his first initials). His wedding was confusing :)

Re: Visit Roald Dahl's Gypsy Cottage Garden

The museum is within walking distance of the station - go down the hill, turn right and carry on down the High st until you find it. From memory Gypsy Cottage is a bit of a trek by foot from there. I cant remember its exact location so it might be worth calling and asking as taxis can be quite scarc...

Re: Gillian at Malory Towers

What a lovely article - thank you so much for sharing. It fills me with joy that Malory Towers could have been based on a real school. The setting is wonderfully described in the books and even now I wish I could be a pupil there and experience the world that she created. The observations on the com...
