Those are beautiful.
Is it me or is the illustration in the bottom left hand corner which is labelled "Enid Blyton's Famous Five" actually a Tresilian picture from the Adventure series?

I agree that it does look rather like a Tresilian illustration, Lucky Star. Or were all the pictures, including that one, specially drawn? Were they done by the same artist, or different artists? I absolutely love the ones for the Secret Seven and Malory Towers. The one of the Faraway Tree is difficult to see clearly - is there a larger image available anywhere?

Hmm - looking at it more closely it appears that that picture labelled "Enid Blyton's Famous Five" has been taken from the front cover of The Mountain of Adventure, but that the image has been reversed! Well-spotted, Lucky Star!

You are absolutely right Anita, the cover picture was taken from The Mountain of Adventure - a major blunder by Royal Mail who then stuck the Famous Five underneath it. The stamps were designed by Christian Birmingham, who is quite a well-known Children's book illustrator. You can see the images better on the postcards that the Royal Mail also produced, and there is a very nice presentation pack with a little booklet about Enid and her work.
The Faraway Tree picture isn't very clear, even on the postcard, it has a sort of dream-like quality to it:-
Despite the Tresilian illustration, I also thought a signed Society Famous Five cover would be nice, with all five signatures on it!
My apologies for the wide scrolling on this thread, but I thought you would like to see a decent sized image.

Thanks for the information, Tony, and the larger image. I like the dream-like quality of the Faraway Tree illustration, and the portrayal of Moon-Face, but Jo looks too young and the Saucepan Man looks a bit like Elton John in those glasses! Also, I'd imagined the tree-trunk being much wider. Still, Christian Birmingham has done well to get as much detail as that into a picture intended for a stamp or postcard!

Does anybody know how this competition worked out? Who won? I tried going to the website, but I can't understand a word...
