Famous Five Food
I often find myself salivating while reading about the large variety of food-stuffs the Five consume throughout the 21 books (who doesn't?) and so decided to compile a 'food list' last time I read them all.
Here it is: (if there are any I have missed out please mention it and I'll pop them in)
Drinks:
Ginger pop (obviously)
Lemonade
Orangeade
Lime juice
Grape fruit juice
Tea
Coffee
Cocoa

Toast and marmalade
Sweets
Cold meat and salad
Plum pie and custard
Cheese
Bread
Biscuits (ginger and unspecified)
Scones
Cake (ginger, cherry, sponge)
Black treacle
Butter (fresh and tinned)

Potatoes (chipped, boiled, fried and in jackets)
Cream
Cream cheese
Apple pie
Gingerbread
Chocolate eclairs

Apples
Bananas
Chocolate mould
Snick-snacks (shrimp, lobster, crab)
Gorgies
I am considering producing a Famous Five Feast for the family (I might attempt to get half the foods in the list- all of them would take me until Christmas to eat )
Finally, if anyone would like me to do a list for another series of Blyton books then you're more than welcome to ask- I chose the Five because, out of the books I've read food plays the biggest part. (It could take me a while to buy the books to produce a list for them though)

Wow I am salivating already at the thoughts of all the foods on that list. Many of them might be best as apicnic though, teh five did love their picnics. Welcome to the forums Gingeroo.

Wow - a great list, Gingeroo! What about the "chocolate mould" to which Sid is partial in Five Fall Into Adventure?

Re: Famous Five Food
Is this a list of what Dick consumes during an average day? No wonder
the five did plenty of exercise - no television for them!

Thanks for those- I've added them to the list.
It's a nice thought but I doubt my neighbours would be too happy if you all turned up for a FF picnic.....

Re: Famous Five Food
You would need most of the Forum (but not Dick and Timmy) to demolish
all that food. Maybe your neighbours are spys, kidnappers or bankrobbers and
we could expose their activities after the picnic.

Re: Famous Five as role model for lifestyle, diet, etc.
It's interesting that the Famous Five books are renowned for the sumptuous food the Five regularly eat, so you might think (if you weren't familiar with the books) that surely the Five must be eating really fine food - of the elaborate sort found in expensive restaurants, or featured in some of the television cooking shows. But really, when you look at the items in that list, most of them are really quite ordinary foods of the sort that most of us probably eat quite regularly - and it becomes clear that Enid Blyton has the ability to make quite ordinary things (food, and probably lots of other things too) seem quite exciting and wonderful.
There may be a few things there that are considered fattening now, and the "food police" may well tell us we must eat them only occasionally, or even not at all (some regard any type of sugar as total poison that must be completely avoided). But here's an interesting fact: we have all these low-fat foods, special diets, and so on, and obesity rates are higher now than ever before; yet when I was a boy we had none of this, and ate fattening foods quite freely (we even cooked food in dripping!), and far fewer people were overweight; and I have sometimes wondered why this is so.
I have occasionally heard rather unorthodox food experts say that these low-fat foods, elaborate diets, and so on of modern times actually make us fatter, and we'd be better off forgetting all that, and eating what we like (yes, I heard one expert actually say that - your body tells you what and how much you need to eat, apparently); but I dare say that people were more active back then, and that may be a part of it, too.
But I have also heard other less extreme experts say (quite reasonably, I think) that too much reliance on low-fat foods can actually contribute to obesity, because that food has had parts of it taken out, and so it's less filling and less satisfying, and thus we crave more, and eat more - and in the long run it makes us fatter than if we just ate an "old-style" diet. And maybe people in the old days were better at moderation, too: they may have had "fattening" foods, but only so much, and no more - whereas some today will stuff themselves full of whatever it is they like - with the quite expected results in the long run. Moderation seems to be less of a quality nowadays.
Some people may frown on the Famous Five books - but really, they aren't such a bad role model for children at all: they are physically active, have decent values and consideration for other people, and I would say their diet is pretty wholesome on the whole, although showing no concern for reams of food "rules". If I had kids and they'd turned out like that, I'd feel pretty pleased, and satisfied that I hadn't done too bad a job of bringing them up.
Regards, Michael.

Re: Famous Five Food
I agree Michael, the foods tend to be delicous, but the way Enid describes them makes them twice as good. The Five wouldn't just eat a gingerbread, they'd devour a dark sticky slab of of the stuff. On the other hand, if I'd added the description for every food I'd still be typing in a months time!
'I'm George,' said the girl. 'I shall only answer if you call me George. I hate being a girl. I won't be. I like doing the things that boys do. You're to call me George. Then I'll speak to you. But I shan't if you don't.'
