Adventure Series!

Post by Courtenay »

Having just finished The Island of Adventure, I'm absolutely raring to read the rest of the series - in order, so obtaining Castle is my top priority, but I definitely want to buy all the others as well.

I'm looking specifically for early hardcover editions - no need for them to be firsts, but I would like to have all the Stuart Tresilian illustrations, as well as the enjoyment of holding and reading a lovely old book. Dustjackets not required.

Does anyone here have any of these for sale, or know where I might be able to pick them up at a reasonable price? I will keep an eye on eBay, of course, but it's nice (and more safe) to be able to do business with fellow Society members.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help! :D

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I think I have a duplicate of Castle, Courtenay, so will check as soon as I can.

I think I've got a spare (if slightly tatty) copy of Ship. I'll try and hunt it out and I can send you a pic to see if you're interested?
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Just wish me luck in finding it... It could be anywhere.

Well, Ship is sixth in the series, so it'll be a while before I get up to it - no need to rush! Thanks again.

At 99p and upwards on eBay, it shouldn't be too much of a problem to buy one!

Ah yes, but if you look at my first post, I'm asking specifically for the early hardcovers, which are harder to get on eBay in reasonable condition at a decent price (though I will still keep looking there). Apart from the fact that the later editions are missing some or all of the illustrations, some of the covers are unbelievably hideous...

Also, how could I give my money to some faceless unknown in cyberspace (of possibly dubious reliability) without first seeing whether any fellow Society members can help? :D

Abe Books often have "vintage hardbacks" available - but start saving, they're don't usually do bargain basement

I spent a while watching out for a hardback copy of 'Castle', but gave up in the end, as I couldn't see anything for less than £10, and then there was postage on top of that.

Yes, I've had a look at Abe Books, and they had some OK prices, but not too many!

Mind you, I paid £10 for Island at my local second hand book dealer (first edition, no jacket, but otherwise in very good condition), and it was worth every penny and more. :D Honestly, looking at those newer paperback covers, they give me the creeps - they just don't reflect the wonderful spirit of the stories and characters at all.

There is (or was, when I lived there a couple of years ago :? ) a Children's Bookshop in Hay-on-Wye, absolutely delightful and a real dive back into childhood but the prices were not for those of a nervous disposition.........

There's some decent early copies on ebay, Courtenay:

'Castle'
Here and Here

'Valley'
Here and Here
