There is certainly a shaft of strong sunlight which the patch of carpet behind Enid, shows, but it does seem that there is something else there too. What is that apparently striped pole near the left edge, for instance? And the hole or dark circle on whatever it is, near her leg? It's quite a puzzle!

I'm convinced its some sort of tubular heater that lies on the floor - but having done a few Google searches I can't find anything like it at all! We need the Find Outers!! :? :?

We used to have a tubular heater but not that long.

I too have seen a white long tubular heater, Daisy.

Maybe Enid had a specially long one made, after all, she was rich!

The black dot to which Ilsa referred seems to be part of a label. If you look carefully, you can see some writing underneath (though magnifying it doesn't make it readable) and even the edge of a white label. I don't think it's a heater. Could it be a cardboard tube that something arrived rolled up in?
Also there seems to be some kind of light coloured runner on the floor next to the carpet. If you look to the right of Enid, you will see a light fringe at the end. The main carpet has a dark fringe, which is further to the right.

Well if it's a roll of something I would have moved it before posing for an official photo! (if it was an official one of course). A agree about the carpet fringe Dave.. it is out of line with the darker edge. The strong sunlight has certainly caused some strange effects!

I agree - its clearer on this photo you posted Pete, as its slightly bigger - but still looks odd. I can see what Courtenay said about half looking like sunlight and half like a tube. very intriguing!

The "black dot" looks to me like an object placed on the light coloured runner. Maybe it's something that Enid wanted to have to hand without it taking up space on her typing table, e.g. an ink blotter or a spare typewriter ribbon?

I don't see a heater or a cardboard tube just a shaft of sunlight from the French door. The label or whatever it is is hanging on a thread or string from either the table or the typewriter. At least that's how I see it.

Good point Kate Mary. I noticed that thread but couldn't make out what it might be. You may well be right.

Yes, that's exactly what I thought just earlier when I looked at it again. Maybe it's a tea bag label? :D
