A tad complicated? I can't even see how to take part... or haven't we been told that yet?

Remember group games close at midnight next Thursday!

Let the games commence!!
If I've understood correctly, for the first round (which ends at midnight on Thursday) we have to pick our favourites - Home (H) or Away (A) - for all 45 games.

Edit: To give an example, my choices for Group A would be:

1. A
2. A
3. A
4. A
5. A
6. H
7. A
8. H
9. A
10. A
11. H
12. A
13. H
14. A
15. A

I won't give my choices for Groups B, C and D at the moment in case I've misunderstood, or in case The Sea By Moonlight decides to alter anything based on suggestions made by others.

I am beginning to have a glimmer of understanding but it seems ever so long-winded.

I'm still not sure. I mean, presumably we don't list the title of the book, just the number and 'A' or 'H'?

So we never know which books are playing which book? :?

Apologies for the lack of clarity. Perhaps it is rather complex to explain in a brief forum message for those not familiar with either football tournaments or Richard Osman's recent topical world cups.

Anita has it spot on; You pick your favourite book from each of the 45 group games I've listed. If you prefer the first book, state 'H'. If you prefer the second book, state 'A'.

Rob, H or A was suggested as a time saving device. I felt it could be long winded inputting a book title 45 times. We know which book is playing which because of the list in post #2. If it's easier then type the book name. As long as I know which book you're voting for in each game.

Using game 1 as an example:

1. Five got down to the sea vs Five go to Mystery Moor

Contrary to Anita, I prefer Five go down to the sea, so I'd state as follows:

1. H

To get the overall result, I will tally the votes for FGDTTS (H) against FGTMM (A). The book with the most votes wins the match and gets 3 points towards their group campaign.

Let's assume 10 forum members take part with 6 voting for FGDTTS and 4 for FGTMM. Therefore FGDTTS wins 6-4 and gets 3 points in the group table. FGTMM loses and gets 0. So after the first game FGDTTS would be top of the table with 3 points and FGTMM would be bottom with 0 points.

Once all games within that group (15 in group A) have played out, the two teams with the most points progress to the quarter finals (which will be drawn after the group phase has been completed).

As games are decided by pooling votes cast across the forum, there is no guarantee that your favourite book will be the eventual winner! So those saying Treasure Island will win for them no mater what, that's fine. But that won't necessarily reflect the view of the forum. Yes, I'm sure it'd be amongst the favourites for the title, but I'd guess potential games against Summgler's Top and Hike would be humdingers!!

It would be easier/better with a poll for each game, but creating 45 polls would be excessive. So please just respond to this thread as Anita has with your choices. I will then tally the votes next Thursday.

The reason for a group format as opposed to a simple knockout format is the odd number of books.

I know it's a bit long winded, but it won't take long and is a bit of fun .... in the end

Let me know if this has cleared anything up and whether or not your all game. No dramas if not, I appreciate it might not be something which garners sufficient interest, but I had some spare time and thought I'd float the idea

Cheers!

Yes. It’s not too explicit, but there is a score assigned to it. I made use of it because there are still some books I find it hard to choose between.

I'll take your word for it! No matter how many times I read the rules I can't figure out if it means a team that wins a game by power of most votes gets 3 points, or if it gets 3 points for every individual who chose it to win.

I interpreted it as the latter - each title voted as winning by each individual will get 3 points. A vote for a draw will only get 1 point.

Well, having consulted my football-interested fiance who knows a bit about these 'league' things he informs me that it usually works with 3 points going to the overall winner of a game based on vote. (Otherwise there's a lot of maths and adding up if each individual vote gets 0,1 or 3 points)

I suppose we shall just have to wait and see!
