Famous Five World Cup

Post by The Sea By Moonlight »

I thought it might be fun to find the forum's favourite Famous Five Book.

I know there are other ranking/rating discussion threads around, but db105's recent thread reviewing the audiobooks and Richard Osman's Red Nose Day Biscuit World Cup inspired me to set up a similarly styled competition to find the incontrovertibly favoured FF book ... like that exists

For those of you unfamiliar with the format, I used a random number generator to pick four groups (3 groups comprising 5 'teams', 1 having 6 teams) with a team playing every other team in that group once. 'Games' are decided by your votes. Votes for both books are tallied. The book with the highest number of votes wins the match. Simples.

3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. After the each book has played its four (five in the case of Group A) games , the group table will be compiled. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter finals. Subsequently, the tournament becomes sudden death with the winner of the quarter finals forming the semi final line-up before the big final.

All group games can be voted on from today until next Thursday at midnight. Quarter finals will take place next Friday. Semi Finals will take place next Saturday. The final will take place next Sunday.

The Groups

Group A
Five Go Down to the Sea
Five Go to Mystery Moor
Five Get into a Fix
Five Go Off to Camp
Five Go to Demon's Rocks
Five Fall into Adventure

Group B
Five Go to Smuggler's Top
Five on a Treasure Island
Five Go Off in a Caravan
Five on a Secret Trail
Five Have a Mystery to Solve

Group C
Five Go to Billycock Hill
Five on a Hike Together
Five on Kirrin Island Again (
Five on Finniston Farm
Five Have Plenty of Fun

Group D
Five Go Adventuring Again
Five Run Away Together
Five Are Together Again
Five Have a Wonderful Time
Five Get into Trouble

The next post will set out the games on which you can vote. The first team wil be the 'home team' and the second, the 'away team'. When responding, please use the following format; game number followed by 'H' if you prefer the home team book or 'A' for the away team book. e.g.

1.H
2.H
3.A .....

Bit lengthy this, but a bit of fun none the less!!

Well gosh you have put a lot of work in to this! I will be interested to see how it pans out. Maybe we should assign colours to each team/book and start our own chants

I'm not sure I 100% understand though. Could you maybe place your own votes/an example vote so we can get it right?

No matter how I do the test Five On A Treasure Island will always be my favourite Famous Five book.

It quite literally blew my mind when I read it and I have never looked at the world the same way since.
Oh,and it was the version with Eileen Soper illustrations too!!

This Famous Five World Cup does look interesting though, and may well throw up a few surprises!

I think I understand, but it would be easier if all the matches were done like the first with the (H) and (A) next to each book, so you can just (copy the original post and) delete all but the letter (for home or away team) that you want as the winner.

So
1. Five Go Down to the Sea (H) vs Five Go to Mystery Moor (A)
Becomes
1. (A)
Because I chose Mystery Moor as the winner, so deleted everything but the game number upfront and the last bracketed letter.

Does that make sense?

I'd personally prefer one on one knock-out matches, rather than group fixtures. Because a group fixture is basically asking us to rank the components of each group, and if we have already ranked so many teams we are pre-determining the result of future matches (since I assume more than one book will qualify from each group).

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

that makes me feel better, loL! I thought I was being a bit thick!

I'm not pouring scorn on the idea - it would be good fun to see which book came out as winner - but I think some of us (like me!) need a simpler method!

Just like Pete my favourite FF book is Five on a Treasure Island and that won't change. While I appreciate the amount of work that seems to have gone into this idea I'm afraid I think it looks like a vastly overly complicated way to tell me what I already know.

If I remember my high school permutations right, 21 books paired in every way (minus difference by order) would be 21*20 / 2 = 210. So the point of groups would be to diminish the number of matches from 210 to 45.

Taking a cue from this, and since everyone seems baffled, here is a suggestion for The Sea By Moonlight.

Instead of four groups of 45 games, why not 10 groups - 9 of 2 and 1 of 3 - so there are only 10 games in the first round. So each winner would leave 10 teams, and from those we get 5 groups (again randomly selected/paired). The 5 winners would give 2 groups for the semifinal - 1 of 2, and 1 of 3. The final would be the winners from these two groups.

The Sea By Moonlight’s first suggestion is a five day cricket test match. This suggestion is a one day affair!

Of course, the greater the number of teams you start with, the greater the skewing of the outcome, since each team has fewer and fewer chances of moving ahead. But it’s a knockout affair, and so quicker.

The outcome might be less about the true favorite, and more about the game itself. But two or three of these games could be played, each time the teams chosen at random, and see if we end up with the same result. Could we ever end up with the least favorite book 21 as the winner? A statistician might be able to give you the answer to that beforehand. Maybe the outcome won’t be skewed after all by dividing into groups.

It does sound a tad complicated, though The Sea By Moonlight would be doing the bulk of the work. The instructions for the first round are in The Sea By Moonlight's first post:

It's a bit like having a poll except that the World Cup idea adds novelty - and of course there's a set date for the completion of each round.

I can't help thinking that a goodly number of people would need to take part in order for the results to be meaningful!
