And there I always thought it was in Essex. Only kidding. Even I knew, years and years before I ever set foot in this country, that Exmoor is in Devon — I read Tarka the Otter in my teens, for a start!!Moonraker wrote: Going slightly off-track, I was aghast on watching Eggheads recently, that a contestant with a geography degree thought Exmoor was in Sussex. Do we have an education system in this country?

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Re: Where do you think Baronia is?
I must admit that when my daughter told me she was going to Exmoor on a hiking/camping trip, I assumed she'd be in Devon. It came as a surprise to learn that the part of Exmoor she was going to was in Somerset. My only geography qualification (O Level at grade B) doesn't count for much as the syllabus was very poor, the teacher did nothing but dictate notes and we failed to complete the course because of prolonged teacher strikes. Most of my knowledge of geography comes from my own reading, viewing and travelling, and from talking to others about their travels.
Getting back on topic, I tend to agree that both Baronia and Tauri-Hessia could have been inspired by the Balkans.

Yes, the vast majority of Exmoor is in Somerset, its just the far western part that crosses the border (at County Gate) into Devon.
I'd say probably about 75% of it is in Somerset.

Re: Where do you think Baronia is?
Oops, well, I stand corrected — it must be Dartmoor that's in Devon. Thanks for that... well, at least I have the excuse of not having grown up in this country. I hope I would do better on Australian geography!

Re: Where do you think Baronia is?
I must say I'm quite relieved to hear that, as reading all the comments about Exmoor being in Devon made me feel I was a pupil at Dame Slap's School! It seems we are both right - but if asked previously I would have said Somerset...which is why I said nothing earlier, for fear of being wrong, lol! When we visited Exmoor a few years ago now, I was sure it was in Somerset. Dartmoor is of course in Devon - a place I've visited a lot.

Dartmoor is totally in Devon, whereas Exmoor crosses two counties - as Cathy said, the majority of Exmoor is in Somerset.

(Just thought you might like to know, old thing. )Oxford English Dictionary wrote:Strictly speaking, majority should be used with countable nouns to mean ‘the greater number’, as in the majority of cases. Use with uncountable nouns to mean ‘the greatest part’, as in I spent the majority of the day reading, is not considered good standard English, although it is common in informal contexts

I just knew when I wrote that that little Miss Perfect would pick me up on what I already knew wasn't strictly correct. However, I considered the substance more important than a strict obedience to English.
