Standalone Books About Hunting For Treasure!

Post by pete9012S »

Reading the excellent Enid Blyton Society Booklet 'The Wonderful Adventure' from way back in 1927 has made me decide to try and read in order, all the Enid Blyton books which generally follow the same sort of theme...

You know the sort of plot. The family will have to vacate their large historic house unless some sort of amazing financial turnaround happens-and happens soon....

There is rumour of treasure/jewels/ but so far down through the years no-one has been able to locate the treasure.

I'm trying to compile a list of standalone stories and short stories that follow those basic plots from the beginning, right to the end of Enid's career.

Can you help me make a definitive list of titles in date published order?

The Wonderful Adventure 1927.

'The Hidey Hole' 1932 (short story)

The Treasure Hunters 1940

The Adventure of The Secret Necklace 1954

I think Pete was referring to stand-alone books, Julie.

There's the Grayling treasure book. It's about a very old house that is going to be sold because the family have run out of money and the children find a map to treasure but in the mean time some awful people are interested in buying the house because they have the treasure map too. It's a long time since I read it and I'm not even sure if it's called The Grayling Treasure... :?

The book you are referring to the "The Treasure Hunters" deepeabee, and is already in the list.

I'd say "The Secret Cave" (1929, to be found in Adventure Treasury) goes into the same direction. Though the children find the treasure for someone else to keep the house.
"Smuggler's Cave" (to be found in Adventure Treasury) also deal with this kind of story.

Not a standalone, but The Famous Five adventure Finniston Farm follows the same theme doesn't it.
Although by the time Enid published this book she had honed, crafted and perfected the art of weaving lots of extra interesting and exciting elements and characters into her story too.

Wasn't that Junior character an inspired creation. I bet even Julie would have liked to have given him a slap!

Junior is the reason why Finniston Farm is one of my least favourite Famous Five books. Every time I read it I want to throttle him.

I get the same feeling although I do like Finniston Farm for it's other qualities, the rather gentle country ambience and the search for the castle and it's treasures.

Five On Finniston Farm has never really been one of my favourite Famous Five books for various reasons, and Junior is one of them! His consistent interference in the Five's business really irritates me and overall, he and his father strike me as very unpleasant characters.

I think my liking for Five on Finniston farm has a lot to do with the audio version I bought in the early 2000's - it's probably one of the best audio versions I've heard of any Famous Five, with some lovely wistful music - very atmospheric. :-)

Junior is the major reason why I haven't reread "Finniston Farm" in ages...
