Apart from a Noddy book I had read to me as a very little child, the first one I read was 'Five Have Plenty of Fun".

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Very difficult question this, but I think it must have been a Secret Seven book from the library. Possibly, Good Work Secret Seven.

Pretty sure mine was a Famous Five book and for some reason it wasn't in order of the series. I'm sure Five on Kirrin Island Again was my first ever Blyton read.

I don't remember the first Enid Blyton book I read but I guess it must have been a Secret Seven series book.

It was definitely 'The Mountain of Adventure' - oh happy day! I haven't read my last one yet (I hope!).

I hope so, too, Francis. Of all the books I've got, it's the ones written for children I always come back to.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's probably The Enchanted Wood. Quickly followed by the other 2 books in the series!
I also remember the Book of Brownies at an early age, but I'm pretty sure I read The Enchanted Wood first.

Like Jenny I also like to read my EB series in the chronological order.
My first EB book was lent to me by my German friend Kati. It was "Five on a Secret Trail" which I still love til this day. This was in the late summer/early fall of 1965. The first underground passage in a book that I remember, this must have been even before I read "Tom Sawyer".
However, I was already unknowingly exposed to EB in 1962 when I watched "Five on a Treasure Island" (1957 movie) on German TV. Nobody can imagine how thrilled I was when Kati gave me more and more of her Famous Five books to read and FOATI was among them.
I discovered the Adventure series probably the year after. "The Circus of Adventure" must have been the first in the series that I read, but I liked "Valley", "Castle" and "Sea" even more.

Truthfully, it was the 1978-79 TV series that got me into the books. Specifically the paperbacks featuring the TV series promo covers.

Which is not to say the books weren't great reading in themselves. Far from it. They give you the actually written adventures from which Richard Sparks, Gail Renard and others would adapt for said small screen.

And these paperback versions were themselves reprints of the publication to paperback of those orig adventures, featuring the later drawn illustrations by Betty Maxey. You might say she foretold an Anne with a [dark-coloured] hairband...!

Anyway... my first was "Five Get Into Trouble".

And as for how and why the "TV covers" don't always match the adventures, well, thanks to this Forum, now I know!

The first book by Enid that I read was, "Five Go Off in a Caravan". It was my dad who introduced me to that book. I had been getting bored, so he gave me an old Enid Blyton book which he had, which was actually a four in one. It had "Five Go Off in a Caravan" and the three books that follow it. It was after that that I became a fan. :)

I know I said earlier that I started at too young an age to remember, but thinking back, my first ever was most likely a newer edition (1980s, with a different cover) of...

After that, I think I moved on to more Noddy books, various short story collections, the Wishing-Chair, the Faraway Tree and Galliano's Circus. The Famous Five and the Five Find-Outers came a little later!

To this day I still have a long way to go before I'm as widely read and knowledgeable about Enid's books as most people here, but I figure I have a lot to look forward to. :D

I remember keeping a lot of Noddy books under my bed when I was little and I have just found them all at the bottom of my bookshelves! They are lovely books, with great pictures inside and I remember being always much entertained on evenings by the excellent stories and pictures. And then my Mum gave me some other ones which I treasured just as much and still do:

I think I must have had these before I read my first Blyton-novel: The Folk of the Faraway Tree.
