Did George's boat have a name?

If so what was it?
If you think it didn't have a name,why didn't it?
Finally,what do you/we at The Enid Blyton Society think her boat should be called?

If you watch the 70s series, you'll sea the name clearly in several episodes :-).

Ah yes - in the 1970s TV series George's boat is called Eryngium, which is a blue flower also known as sea holly.

I don't recall George's boat being named in the books, but of course, I could be wrong. If it wasn't named it was probably because it was just a small rowing boat. But then remember when the first book was published in 1942, the war was on, and not many things were named, because of the enemy. Even sign posts were taken down!

So maybe this was the reason Enid didn't think to name the boat in the books. :|

Julian gave an exclamation and nudged George.

I recall a few boat names in several Five books, but never George's...

In Five Fall Into Adventure published 1950,we read;

Dick put up the little sail. The wind was in their favour, so he thought he might as well use it. They would get there all the more quickly.

The illustration in the link below shows George's 'little rowing boat' to be a considerable size..
http://www.enidblytonsociety.co.uk/auth ... 425995.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In Five Have a Mystery to Solve it is interesting to note that even the little rowing boat they hire whilst on holiday has a name. I'm sure you can remember what it was????

Image

In the book itself we read;

The boat-boy was very obliging. ‘You can have the boat today and onwards, if you like, you needn’t wait till tomorrow,’ he said. ‘I know you’ll bring me the money all right! So, if you’d like to have it this afternoon, it’s up to you. Choose which boat you like. They’re all the same. If you want to take it out at night too, and do some fishing, you can - but tie it up safe, won’t you?’
‘Of course,’ said Julian, going to look at the boats. He beckoned to the others, and they all came over.
‘Any boat we like, day or night!’ said Julian. ‘Which do you fancy? Starfish - Splasho - Adventure - Sea-gull - Rock-a-bye? They all look good, sound little boats to me!’
‘I’d like “Adventure”, I think,’ said George, thinking that that particular little boat looked sturdy, deari and sound. ‘Nice name - and nice little boat!’
So Adventure it was! ‘And a jolly good name for any boat of ours!’ said Dick, pushing it down to the sea with Julian. ‘Whooooosh! There she goes! Steady my beauty - we want to get in! Chuck in all our clothes, George! We can dress when we feel cold.’

In the Five's last ever adventure we reach the point in the story were George uses her sturdy little boat for the very last time....
But,just before she sets off to Kirrin island in her boat for final time,we read;

‘No, Timmy. I’m not going back till I’ve found out who’s there!’ she said. ‘It would be cowardly to turn back now. And if it’s somebody waiting for me to turn up with the papers, they can think again. Look - I’m hiding them here under the tarpaulin in this boat. It would be idiotic to try and hide them on the island if there’s someone there who might rob me of anything I’ve got - it might be one of the thieves who climbed in to the tower room, and left some of the papers behind. If he’s waiting for me, he won’t get any papers!’
George stuffed the parcel of papers under the tarpaulin as she spoke. ‘It’s Fisherman Connell’s boat, called Gypsy,’ she said, reading the name on the boat by the light of her torch. ‘He won’t mind me hiding something in it!’

So even the boat kept next to George's had a name!

What a faithful boat it has been.It has served the Famous Five well as they searched shipwrecks,searched for ingots,rescued kidnapped friends and relatives,helped them to escape from the clutches of the nasty 'Sticks',transported food and supplies to Uncle Quentin whilst he beavered away underground on Kirrin Island,helped them arrive at their Island to repel suspected 'trippers' on so on and so forth.

The boat was painted red in one adventure.can you remember which one??/
How many times in their adventures was the boat painted?
We can remember at least one occasion when 'Master George' was impatient to use her boat ,but had to wait until its new coat of paint was dry!

And now sadly we come to the last illustration of George and her boat.
Is it me,or does George look very like Enid herself in this picture...

Lets conclude with the last picture of George (just as we originally encountered her in the very first adventure) alone, in her wonderful,sturdy adventurous little rowing boat with her faithful dog Timothy,the very best dog in the whole wide world....

Lovely musings on George's boat, Pete. How strange that it's never named. Maureen, I like your suggestion of Adventure Ahoy!

Other possibilities:

Bobby Boy
Wanderer
Driftwood
Ingots
Artful Dodger
Heyho!
Heave Ho!
Kittiwake

So far as I can recall her boat was never named. It was always just "George's boat". As to what it should be named there is only one name that George would have given her boat; "The Timmy".
