Rob...but I answer to anything!! ;-)
:P

I agree its a nice cover. I loved it as a child. Many of the Armada covers of the day were similarly good. I especially liked the one for 'Castle' -

I have noticed a couple of names/similarities from Enid's life - Rivers-End (Bourne End) and a miserable gardener, Mr Tapp - Tapping/Tupping?

I meant Rob, I think, but I'm never sure who is what - unless I've been married to them for 40 years and even then................ !

Ah yes - I remember thinking the same about Rivers-End. I'd completely forgotten about Tapp though! It's an interesting book as there are elements of the young Enid Blyton in Elizabeth Farrell. Aunt Grace is a particularly well-drawn character - rather daunting on the surface but vulnerable in some ways.

Five On A Secret Trail - Betty Maxey edition.

I'm rather enjoying it.Anne almost gets her way at the beginning of this book and has a holiday 'without any adventures' - for a short time!

Julian and Dick are away in France - just how many times did they go,does anybody recall?
Can't remember if I guessed the twins angle to the sightings of the strange boy - knowing me I probably didn't!
Image
One of the twins -many of Betty Maxey's characters look very similar to this chap! Wonder if he was based on someone from real life?

Question: Why didn't George take Tim to Kirrin Island for privacy and seclusion when he was being laughed at for wearing a protective collar???
Image
Rrrrrruff!!!

Image
One of the twins in consoled by Ju - what time is it by Julian's watch - Maxey leaves us hanging!

Image
Anne doing what she does best - a caring homemaker with a gentle touch!

Image
The twins make their peace...

It's just the ending of this book that has always confused me - but maybe now at the ripe old age of 49 it will suddenly all make sense!!

Image
This book's secret passages and underground streams and blueprints leave me a little flummoxed!!

Image
Fortunately,it all ends well....

She's left readers free to draw in their own preferred time when they colour the picture!

I have just bought a three-in-one book. The Secret of Cliff Castle, Smuggler Ben and The Boy who Wanted a Dog, so have just started the first story.

Sounds good, Pauline. We've just had a Readathon on Smuggler Ben and The Secret of Cliff Castle so feel free to add your own observations if you like. I wouldn't read the thread (link below) until you've finished both those books though as it's full of spoilers:

The drawings leave me a little flummoxed, the inclusion of slightly too many lines makes some of them look rather peculiar!

Julian's watch strap has the line in just the wrong place,it looks like that hand is reaching through him somehow and the poor chap's other arm looks like it's been attached backwards  . The one stood on the floor seems to be missing a leg and the dog appears to have a central front leg  .

Can't argue with any of those succinct artistic observations in the illustration that features Julian's watch. :D

In Betty's defense, her artistic depictions of the two or three Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax in the very same illustration must surely be leaving everyone stunned by her mastery and sheer insouciance in her chosen craft...

Now now, Pete, they could only be Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax if Kirrin Cottage (near where the action of Secret Trail is set) is located in the extreme west of Cornwall, Wales, Scotland or Ireland. I'm sure Betty Maxey would have known that.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)
