Pete, I am pretty sure there was another one called "Enid Blyton Day 2014". And that one must have been merged with the thread called "Meet-up in 2014" as there was no longer a chance for a real EB Day in Twyford this year.pete9012S wrote:I'm amazed there aren't three!

I believe this thread was originally called Enid Blyton Day 2014. It had to be renamed, as it wasn't a Society Day, and was, in fact, being organised by someone who isn't a Society member.

I think the thread of Meet-up in 2014? was the original Enid Blyton created by Michael. Anita had changed it to Meet-up and merged it with Sally's thread. Maybe I am wrong here.

Yes, some merging and renaming was done at some point!

Re: Looking For Fatty & co. in Peterswood/Bourne End
An Australian writer has just opened a website with a couple of nice links to my own work. He especially likes the writing of Enid Blyton and Evelyn Waugh, which echoes my own interests. It's Evelyn I'm working on now but I'll be back when the time is right...
Thank-you especially for the words about Fatty and co. in Peterswood, Gerard.

Thanks for sharing his website. It's indeed interesting.
Can't wait to read more of your fascinating and entertaining Mystery series books reviews in the future...when you'll be through with Evelyn Waugh, of course.

Although I think even Enid's daughters have said that Peterswood is based loosely on Bourne End, in a letter from Enid I have seen, she says that she doesn't use real places. I guess like most authors, she takes a bit of this place, a bit of that place etc and you have Peterswood or Kirrin etc.

Well, as I consider Bourne End to be a dump, I sincerely hope so!

Well in its modern form it certainly bears no resemblance to the idyllic Peterswood of the books...

I actually get more of the villagey Peterswood type of atmosphere in nearby Cookham, with its sharp corners and quaint old shops.
The corners especially remind me of the books when PC Goon came around too sharply and was clattered off his bicycle onto the ground with a huge bump!

Yes, I agree, Pete. Well End, where Old Thatch is situated is rather pleasant as well. It is just the walk from BE railway station that to me was so awful!

Re: Looking For Fatty & co. in Peterswood/Bourne End
NIgel - I have always been disappointed by Bourne End as such but in fact Well End which is where Colmoorholme Lane is situated (location of Old Thatch) is much more pleasant and probably reflect more how Bourne End village would have been in the 30s and 40s. A majority of the buildings now in Bourne End were built in the 60s and 70s - not the best architectural era. Agree Cookham is much more akin (without the Indian restaurants of course which wouldn't have existed!) and guess it was all an inspiration to the idyllic Peterswood.

Re: Looking For Fatty & co. in Peterswood/Bourne End
We walked along the river from Marlow to Bourne End and then from Old Thatch to the train station. By that time my feet were killing me, so I did not really pay much attention to the streets of Bourne End.Moonraker wrote:Yes, I agree, Pete. The river walk is beautiful. It was just the main road that put me off - nothing like my imaginary Peterswood!

The village I live in is Peterswood, bench and all, with a bit of dust to write the word ' waxworks' with a stick!
