With regards to the question posed by Duncan in October about the first edition of 'Hike Together' in 1951, I have a first edition which has the introduction and signature on the opposite (left hand) page to the main heading and publisher's name:
'This is the tenth book about the Famous Five - Julian, Dick, George and Anne - and Timmy the Dog. The other nine books are...'
ending with 'I hope you will like this one, "Five on a Hike Together", as much as you like all the others. Best wishes from Enid Blyton' ( in standard signature form).

By the time of my first edition of 'Wonderful Time', 1952, the end of the introduction has been rephrased to 'Good luck to you all from Enid Blyton'. In the introduction to the first edition of 'Mystery Moor' in 1954 it's 'My love to you all from Enid Blyton'. In 1955 it's 'Best wishes to you all from Enid Blyton'. A note that the characters are entirely imaginary has been added to the next page after the main title of 'Mystery Moor'.

I also note that by the time of 'Together Again' in 1963 a note of the copyright has been added on the next page after the main title: Enid for the text and Hodder and Stoughton (not Eileen Soper) for the illustrations. Extra vigilance by the publishers?

Excellent, Duncan :)!
It's always such a pleasure to read your articles. Thank you!!!
According to my print outs you've covered now 10 FFO & Dog books. Five more to go...I can't wait.
I think we now have 12 of the 15 books.

Any chance of another soon please, please Duncan!!!

Click on this link Chrissie, scroll down a bit to the German version and count the books in the left hand column - it's possible I have miscounted as I do make a fair few mistakes!

Pete, are we still talking about Duncan's analysis' of the FFO & Dog books? :?: :?
I have 11 analysis' of him printed out and sticking in plastic folders in my EB bookcase next to the FFO books which I all possess in old English and in old German hardcovers.
I have these analysis print outs:
1. burnt cottage
2. secret room
3. missing necklace
4. hidden house
5. pantomime cat
6. invisible thief
7. vanished prince
8. strange bundle
9. Holly Lane
10. Tally-Ho
11. missing man

So if there are 12, I must have forgotten one analysis by Duncan which I was not aware of and never printed out.

Spiteful letters seems to be missing - but maybe you have it without realizing it. See here:

I presume this is what you have printed out.

Pete, I have to correct myself, there's no analysis of "pantomime cat", but I had some print outs of "Looking for Fatty and Co in Peterswood/Bourne End" sticking next to "pantomime cat", so I was assuming that it would be Duncan's analysis of "pantomime cat".
Just printed out "disappearing cat" and "spiteful letters", so there are 3 more books waiting for his analysis now.
Let's hope he'll do the next one this year. :)

I've just logged in for a second. Nice to read these last few comments, Chrissie, Pete and co.

I'll see if I can get round to Enid before the year end. My Evelyn Waugh studies have taken over as you can see from the menu here: http://www.evelynwaugh.org.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The latest addition is a talk on Scoop I've just given at Chipping Campden Literary Festival.

After more Waugh, there is the painter George Shaw to catch up on. Then I might get back to Enid. I will get there in the end. Never :D doubt :D that :D

Sorry, Duncan and Pete, for not writing sooner.
When we returned from the UK on 24th of May, I had a cold and later on I was lucky to keep up with the newest EBS posts, so now I'm checking my inbox and read the older posts.
Good luck for Evelyn Waugh!!!

I've once been to Chipping Camden in the Cotswolds (1981) in order to take a picture of a beautiful bay window in an old house which I had seen in a coffee table book on the UK, but unfortunately there were lots of cars parked right in front of this window and the photo didn't turn out very well. :(

Yes, just like Pete I can't wait to read another FFO & Dog analysis! 8) 8) 8)

The mention of Chipping Campden always reminds me of the 'Campden Tablet' which takes its name from the town where it originated, and is used in food preservation. I visited the labs there when I worked for a food company in Cheltenham in the 1970's/80's. That might have coincided with your visit to the town, Chrissie. :D

From Wikipedia: The name Campden tablet comes from the town of Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire, England, where the original solution was developed in the 1920s by the Fruit and Vegetable Preserving Research Station - now Campden BRI. The idea was then taken up by the Boots Co., who developed the tablet.
