Does the name Kirrin really exist? - is it a real name in the real world? - or did Enid Blyton make it up?
I've certainly never heard of anyone with this name - the closest I can think of was an Australian politician called John Kerin.

Google tells me there are a handful of people with Kirrin as their first name. The top results are all about the Famous Five though.

"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

If you look on Facebook, you'll find some fake Famous Five profiles, but also quite some real people with the surname Kirrin - Laurence, Becky, Julianna...

Well, how about the name came from Quentin's side but when he married he gave the Island to Aunt Fanny?

The books do say that Kirrin Island, Kirrin Cottage, Kirrin Farm etc have been in Fanny's family for years though.

Kirrin is obviously a local name in the same way as my wife's
relative - Livermore - is common in the Sidmouth area of
Devon. Some of the Livermores were rich and others were
very poor - they were not directly related.

I think it was just an honest mistake on Enid Blyton's part!
She made a few of these 'name' inconsistencies - sometimes even with the same book (Alf/James?); Joan/Joanna, and of course, this one, although it was several books, and years, apart when the error occurred. Also with all the other series of books being written concurrently, I guess it's not too surprising! I wonder if she ever drew up a basic family tree for her family groupings in the varying book series?
Oh well, I guess it's just one of things, and doesn't detract from the books particularly; in fact, I'll be honest, I don't think I'd noticed until first reading about it on-line a few years back!!

Quentin and Julian's dad are brothers are they not? So Julian and Dick etc should be called Kirrin too. But isnt there surname given as Barnard or Bernard in one of the later books?

My theory is that Quentin agreed to give up his name in order to marry Fanny & get his hands on the Kirrin estate.

By the time the first book starts Quentin's secret opium and gambling habits have reduced the family fortune to pennies, hence the need for the kids to find some gold....
