I always prefer June, number 6, as I always feel that during July most places get quite busy due to school summer holidays. But having said that I will hopefully be available anytime. :)

That's a good, fair point, Julie! I think the school summer hols in Hampshire are from 26th July - 3rd Sept, more or less the same as Dorset. However, I'll double check & let you know. I do agree with you & I would rather go when it's less busy. :D

number 6 wrote:Ok, Julie, I'll start a thread soon. I was going to propose Saturday 1st July or Sat 8th July for the meet up. Seems sensible, as Public transport to Exbury will be up & running by then. I'll put it to Gary Russell to see if any of the two dates will be convenient for him, too. It would enhance the meet up if Gary could make it, as his insight into the making of the series/stories, etc, would be most entertaining! :D
However, the proposed dates are only a suggestion & I wouldn't object to the meet up being towards the end of June if it is convenient for everyone else who wants to attend. :D
Either are good for me at the moment *but* this is about you guys, not me. It needs to be what suits you.

You're absolutely right, Gary. I'll start a thread & let the majority decide when they'd like to meet up. :D

Thanks, Number 6. Here's a link to the thread:

Below, you can see a Famous Five Jigsaw (from 1978), which I won on eBay, earlier this year (April).

The above Jigsaw, was in very good condition, and there was only one piece missing.

Actually the instructions are for two games. They run like this:
"Sinking ships" is a game for two persons. Each one gets one card with imprinted ships of war (on the backside of the cards). Of course you have to hide the way your ships are arranged from your opponent. The first player asks about a grid square where (s)he believes a ship is, e.g. 2B. S(He) marks the square with a dot. The opponent has to tell if it was a hit or if it even sank. If it was a hit the attacker marks the square with a circle, the victim makes a cross. If you made a hit you may continue to request squares, if you missed it's your opponent's turn. The one who sank all his opponent's ships first is the victor.

Playing quartett:
It's for three ore more players. Shuffle the cards well and distribute them round. Everyone organises his cards and puts down complete quartetts (e.g. cards C1, C2, C3, C4). There are different options how to play.
Drawing: All players one after the other draw one card from their left neighbour. Complete quartetts are put down. You play until all quartetts are put down..
Asking: The youngest one asks one of the other players for a card s(he) likes to have. If s(he) gets the card from this player s(he) can ask the same player for another card. If s(he) doesn't get the card, it's the player's turn who has been asked to ask another player for a card. The one who has most quartetts at the end has won.

Thanks, Wolfgang. The card game instructions will come in handy! It's a lovely set of cards with a good selection of photos from Five Go to Smuggler's Top, Five Go Adventuring Again, Five on a Secret Trail and Five Go Off to Camp. Five Go to Smuggler's Top and Five Go Off to Camp have always been two of my favourite adaptations.

The album looks brilliant too! I'm particularly fond of the photos from Five on Kirrin Island, Five on a Hike Together and Five Go Off in a Caravan, which are also favourites for me.

Talking of German versions of books etc, I only just learned yesterday that the German edition of 'Bom' is called 'Bum'...

Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Actually I can't picture you or Zöe playing "Sinking ships" (do you call it "Sea battle" in English?) with these card sets ;-).

It's usually called Battleships or Battleship.

Hey all. I was looking for some of the Famous Five badges... must be someone who sells them or makes reproductions, is there not? I got a glimmer of hope when I came across this site: http://www.rscollect.co.uk/famous" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; five.htm but then it seems to be old and the most of the links lead nowhere. Any idea where one might pick up some of these badges as listed here? I did like that this page has fairly big images of each badge... too bad they aren't high resolution as one might be able to make their own.... :)

Someone posted on these forums some years ago that Sue Best (Aunt Fanny) had passed away. At the time there was very little information about her online and no mention of her acting credits on sites like Imdb, other than The Famous Five.

Glad to learn from Gary Russell in this thread that she's still with us. It's a shame she wasn't tracked down in time for the DVD interviews, but I've found a little bio of her with, presumably, a recent photograph: http://www.shakespearelink.org.uk/sue-best-cv" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
