Trying to find the book or story about field of gold

Post by fields of gold »

Is there a story about a dancing elf and a field of buttercups that is a field of gold to the elf?

Welcome to the forums. You might be thinking of 'Gold for Everyone', in which an elf dances through the woods singing about gold shining in the sun for everyone to enjoy. A greedy wizard demands to see the gold, which turns out to be a field of buttercups.

The story appears in the following books:

"Heyho for a starry night and a heathery bed!" - Jack, The Secret Island.

"There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books."
- E. Nesbit, The Wonderful Garden.

I think there might be some others, but I can't think of titles!
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

(E. Blyton, Sunday Times, 1951)

Interestingly, this story featured in a jokey article in The Times, shared by Georgina Hargreaves on Facebook, although only a short part of the article has been photographed. 8)

I didn't know there had been a jokey article in The Times. In what way did 'Gold for Everyone' feature, Rob? It's not a jokey story at all but poignant and thought-provoking as it shows the wizard's inability to see the value of a glorious field of buttercups that brings happiness to so many. He can only understand value in terms of money and possessions, and his pursuit of wealth has brought him endless worry and made him mean and hard-hearted. The little elf stops her singing and weeps for him.
