Trying to find two short stories

Hello,

My Mum used to read me lots of short stories and in particular I remember two of them, but I'm not sure where to start to track them down. This is what I can remember, I suspect they came out of the same book...

* A lady loses her glasses and is punished when she stands up and they break all over the floor (her name might be something like Mrs Poppin?)

* Fairies who came to a party all dressed up in pretty dresses with contrasting sashes

Any ideas gratefully received! Thank you :)

Are you thinking of Sally Simple's Spectacles? It is a short story about a woman called Sally who thinks she has lost her glasses. The outcome is that they have fallen into her folded up umbrella, and when she opens it out, the glasses fall and smash on the floor.

You could write the word, 'fairy' in the Cave of Books search and try to find your story in the results. Perhaps a title might ring a bell.

There's a story in the Book of Fairies called Pinkity and Old Mother Ribbony Rose which features fairies and different coloured sashes (I think).

Thank you!

That is definitely the spectacles one - much appreciated. I wonder where the Poppin came from! :/

I will continue to hunt for the fairies with sashes!

Actually there are two characters in the story Sally Simple's Spectacles: one called Mrs Popoff and one called Mrs Pippitty. Combined they could become Poppin, so maybe you subconsciously remembered these characters...? :D

I've just had a quick look through my copy of Treasury of Enid Blyton Bedtime Stories (which contains Sally Simple's Spectacles) and a story called The House In the Tree caught my eye. It is about a girl called Marigold who helps seven little pixie children get ready for a party by tying their sashes. The dresses they wear are either blue or yellow with the opposite coloured sash. Perhaps this is the other story you are looking for?

Thank you - I have found a hardback copy of the book on Ebay which looks in excellent quality. It goes without saying that it is already in the post. Thank you all so much. :)

Hello,

I just wanted to let you know that a beautiful book turned up for me today.

The stories were definitely the ones I remembered and a lot of the other pictures now ring a lot of bells too.

Thank you all so much for helping me to find it! :)

Corned beef and beetroot! :)

I'm not sure what Julian would think...

We never heard about beetroot in their picnic sandwiches, did we! Anne managed to do wonders with ham, lettuce and tomatoes mostly, hard boiled eggs at times too!
Welcome to the family by the way Anne's Sandwiches.
