This might not be the right book because some details differ, but I'll mention it just in case - The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Mary Lennox goes to live with her uncle in a big house on the Yorkshire moors (though her uncle is away a lot so she mostly sees the housekeeper, maid and gardener). Mary is lonely but she gets to know a boy called Dickon, who teaches her about gardening and helps her make friends with birds and other wild creatures. Many more things happen, but I don't want to give away the plot.

I think the book you are looking for might be "Seal Morning" by Rowena Farre. It is more autobiography than fiction. It is about a young girl who goes to live with her Aunt Miriam in a remote seaside cottage in the Scottish Highlands. She befriends all sorts of wild animals, squirrels, deer, otters, even a rat but the closest friend she has is Lora the seal pup. The book is an enchanting account of a private and idyllic life far from civilization. My copy has illustrations by Raymond Sheppard who did the pictures for Enid Blyton's Adventures of Pip books.

I like the sound of it too, especially a copy with Raymond Sheppard illustrations.
