Brick: Something that many people are in Enid Blyton books - 'You're a real brick, mother!' ;-)

Pencil:
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

(E. Blyton, Sunday Times, 1951)

Pencil: I recall quite clearly that in at least one of the Noddy books, Mr Plod "licked the point of his pencil" before taking notes on whatever Noddy and friends were reporting to him. Why licking a bit of graphite would do anything to make it write better, I don't know — I should have thought it would do the opposite — and it's not something I've ever seen or heard of anyone doing in real life, but...

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)
